Contrary to the other people who reviewed this hotel, I stayed here during 8 days for business. My luxury room was very spacious and clean, but definitely not something I can rave about. I would have liked to have a more functional room, with a safety box, soap and shampoo, more diversity in storage, less but better-positioned light switches, etc. Since I was absent during the day, I did not see much of the personnel but realized that cleaning was done every second day. The internet was of good speed, but availability was rather intermittent.

Personally I do not find the hotel’s location very attractive, even though once you know how to get around there is no problem at all. My biggest disappointment with Summer Grove Villa was that at my arrival at midnight the promised pick-up did not show at the airport. Believe me it is not easy to find a taxi at this time in Banjul.

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in The Gambia. We stayed in a Two Bedroomed Apartment at Summergrove Villas in Kololi.
We were met at Banjul Airport by one of Summergrove's drivers (this service is included in the price) and driven to Summergrove where we were met by Neneh the lovely manager.
Our Apartment was really beautiful, very clean and spacious, ideal for my husband, two grown up children (in their 30's) and myself.
Our Apartment was cleaned every day by a lovely young man named Babou, who also brought us clean towels every morning(.Babou carved a gift for us and gave it to us before we returned home)
Breakfast was available every day from 8 am until 2 pm if required (extra charge) and there was a bar area which was well stocked with bottled water, soft drinks, beers and spirits.
You served your self and wrote down every thing in the "Honesty" book and paid for your drinks at the end of your stay.
Summergrove has 22 units ranging from 3 Bedroomed Apartments down to studios with air conditioning and ceiling fans, within a gated complex, with a security guard 24 hours a day ( although this is not needed as the crime rate in the Gambia is 0.04% )
We met Jim the owner while we were there, who is a lovely guy and very helpful.
Neneh's father was visiting while we were staying there and we were all invited to a meal that she had cooked.
The weather was glorious all week with not a cloud in the sky.
Summergrove is very central to the beach (about 10/15 minutes walk ) and the senegambia strip( where all the Restaurants are) The food is excellent.
We spent a lot of time around the lovely pool at Summergrove, the beach is pretty, but the sea has strong undercurrents which makes swimming very difficult.
You may have heard a lot about Bumsters and I must admit I was a bit nervous after reading about them before we left, but there was not a problem with them at all, yes, you are approached, but just a " No Thank you " was sufficient and they left you alone.
The Gambian people are lovely and the most friendliest people we have ever met, they are always smiling even though they so poor.
There are some people that will try to rip you off, but you have to use your common sense and see through the scams.
We went to the monkey park while we were there (10 minutes walk) with a local guide and lots of peanuts, it was great fun, as the monkeys will come and take the peanuts out of your hand.
We also did two full day tours while we were there with ARCH- tours which are excellent ( they are next door to Safe-way supermarket on the senegambia strip.)
These tours were amazing, we did Roots by Boat, to the village where Kunta Kinteh lived before he was captured and taken into slavery and where his descendants still live today.
The second tour was by jeep, on this day we went to a few villages and a school and saw how the real Gambian people live, the poverty is terrible. It was very thought provoking.
We had an amazing holiday and hope to go back to Summergrove again next year.
We would highly recommend it.

If you are thinking about booking a holiday here - do it! Fantastic place. Very clean, friendly and secure apartments with a lovely pool. Very relaxed.

We were collected by staff from Summer Grove at the airport promptly. The apartment we had was spacious, with air conditioning and a balcony. The view was not the best I have had but nevertheless we still sat outside on the balcony everyday at some point. We watched the Gambian life go by, watched the vultures coming home to roost and the fruit bats eating from the Paw Paw trees. The beach was only a short walk away.

The staff are all lovely and very helpful, if you want to go on a trip, just ask them, they will accomodate whenever possible. Sometimes we ate breakfast at Summer Grove, sometimes we ate out, both were good and very reasonably priced.

We were approached alot in the town and the beaches but a polite 'No thank you' is a good way dealing with them but do try and engage with the local people, learn about their culture as they are very friendly, happy people.

A good trip out is on a boat trip through the mangrove creeks, watching the beautiful pelicans, herons, paraquets and other birds and finishing with a nice cool drik or a meal. Good food to try is the local Benchin dish of Barracuda and rice or Lady Fish.

Hope this is useful

Five of us stayed in the 3-bedroom apartment for ten days this November. I would thoroughly recommend Summer Grove Villa to anyone. The accommodation is of a good standard, well laid out and well maintained. The communal area is excellent with a pool that’s both a decent size and a decent depth. Breakfast is served from 8 until 3, if you want it, and there’s an honesty book for the well-stocked bar.
While we were there, the owner Jim was present as well as his new manager, Neneh. They are both really friendly and welcoming, as are all their staff. There are two drivers, Zak and Yusupha, who will take you anywhere – you cover the costs – so long as they’re not on airport duty. There’s a great feeling and attitude to the whole place; you’re left alone to your holiday if that’s what you want, but there’s always people around to draw upon if you need something.
There appears to have been some online rumour that Jim intends to turn the apartments into long-term lets, but he assured me that this is not the case. He does have a couple of long-term tenants, but most of the apartments are and will continue to be available to holiday-makers.

We stayed here for 9 days with our three little kids and two nannies. We stayed in a three bedroom apartment. Being our first time in Gambia, we found the location to be perfect. A few minutes walk from the "strip" with all the bars and restaurants. We found Alan and Sharon to be a very hospitable and friendly couple. They made our stay a most memorable one. Sharon baked a lovely cake for our daughter's birthday (5 year old) and Alan gave her free swimming lessons. The apartment was cleaned daily and the staff were polite and friendly. Summergrove villa is a safe and secure place to stay. Being the off season period, we found Gambia to be quiet, peaceful and to our liking. We had a lovely chap (Peaceful), who took us around Gambia. He was introduced to us by Alan and we found him to be very honest and pleasant. The only negative for us at Summergrove was the malfunctioning airconditioner in our bedroom (apartment 1). It made sleeping at night very uncomfortable. We would definitely stay here on our future trips to the Gambia and would be looking forward to Sharon's lovely Yorkshire Pudding. Bini's just across the road is a lovely place to eat out at night. Ian & Carol.

You'll probably hear those phrases alot in Gambia! Relaxing and enjoying the non stop sunshine!

Arriving in the Gambia can be quite hectic what with the taxis, bumsters and other misfits. But Alan and Sharon from the Summer Grove Villa make the experience painless and enjoyable with a airport to villa transfer all arranged so after the ardulous 7/8 hours flight (hopefully not with Thomas Cook!) all you have to do is turn up.

On arrival you are greeted and instantly feel welcome and relaxed. The room have air conditioning, and all mod cons which are kept to high standards and are cleaned daily.

For someone's first time in Gambia I do thoroughly recommend the summer grove villa over and above the Hotel experience. Sharon and Alan will fill you in on the pit falls, lines etc that you will hear regularly from the locals helping you avoid the usual scams ( something that you dont get with the hotels which are always surrounded by the bumsters.

The welcome you get isn't just on arrival but continues throughout your stay and are always willing to recommend and arrange trips and taxis through their contacts (again preventing you from getting ripped off) They are always around to have a chat and truely make you the villa feel like a home from home.

Another great thing is the location, just a couple of minutes from the strip (central area for restruants, pubs and clubs), beach and monkey park, which is always handy for those late nights.

We will definitely be coming back and after hearing some horror stories of other hotels we wouldn't stay anywhere else.

PS. If you like games ask Sharon what granny bought when she went to market?
