“Comfortable, but old and broken, bad location, not worth the money!”
Reviewed 11 July 2012

The best thing about La Residence is that the beds were very comfortable. Sometimes that's hard to find here in Madagascar. H

owever, considering the price, it was unacceptable that they had so many plumbing issues, a huge amount of mold (bad for allergies), and not the best service (in a country that usually has outstanding service).

The worst part about La Residence is its location - far from any of Tana's normal things to see and do (including far from any decent restaurants or places to buy food). If you're not driving yourself (and it's hard to want to, considering Tana's horrible traffic), then it's hard to get to and from La Residence without paying exorbitant private taxi fees (including the private taxi the hotel already knows - WAY too expensive!) - and sometimes taxis just plain don't want to go there anyway. Which means you're reliant on the hotel's food, which is fairly expensive (normal price for a very high quality restaurant in Tana) but not that tasty and pretty bad service (takes them forever, apparently they're not well-equipped for cooking for just 3 guests).

Overall, I'd say find another hotel. For the same price, you can find one much nicer and much closer to the stuff to do in town.

Room Tip: Try to get one without plumbing problems and horrible mold.

Apparently M. Adam’s biggest concern is the distance from downtown. So, it’s sure we are not in downtown but we're only 4 miles away, in a residential area served by taxis and buses, with a free shuttle from the hotel to the city center (upon reservation). Many of our guests continue to come back (even knowing our location), certainly for good reasons.
Regarding the restaurant, we do not claim to be the best restaurant in town but we are reputable, and remain in a range of affordable prices, as the room rates.
As for the plumbing problems, this can happen in any hotel.
Nevertheless, we are sorry that M. Adam did not enjoy his stay in our hotel, and we regret he didn’t talk directly to us, we would have done our best to find a solution…

Stayed at La Residence for seven nights. I booked a 'suite' so that I could have internet access (not available in all rooms). Sadly this was unavailable after the first day due to a problem with the phone line. The manager kindly offered her mobile internet flash drive to check emails but was not quite the same as wireless access.
We had enquired about paying with credit card and were told that this was not a problem (we even checked a few times to make sure!). Sadly on check out we were told they were not able to process a credit card because they did not have internet. Am not sure why internet was required...butI ended up paying in US dollars - which was a lot of cash. It would have been good to have been told this earlier, and for management to make other arrangements to allow us to use credit cards.
The room was huge and a bit faded. However seemed clean and lots of hot water. Other issues were a broken shower and very musty bed linen. Mosquito net had some holes. Staff were nice and food was fine.
Recommend? For 50 Euros per night it was OK but will search around for somewhere else when we go back.

Dear Guest, we take your comments to improve ourselves and provide you with better service.
We have already taken steps to ensure that such problems will not happen again :
• We have changed our internet provider and we do not rely anymore on old phone lines. Now we go through the airwaves with the wimax system ;
• We have improved our system for electronic payment by abandoning the old system which depends on the wired telephone lines and changing for the GPRS system, a standard for mobile derivative of GSM which allows data rates higher and more secure.
We apologize again to all our guest who suffered from inconveniences due to this failure of Malagasy telephone lines.

If you want a moment of calm this is most certainly the place. Located in a non busy part of Tana , A few minutes walking from the hotel ,you can see the nice view of the rice field. the rooms are clean and big ,the owner and staff are very kind and helpful. Their help and recommendations was good.IF twice a day [go&back to center ] the transportation fee was free,it will be excellent!!
