I am not surprised that there has been no previous Review in English for this culinary experience. We visited Chez Mariette with Malagasy friends who saw it as a REALLY special occasion as she is seen as being just about THE Malagasy chef. This is not a restaurant as such, rather Mariette has three tables for diners on the ground floor of her nineteenth century home on one of the hills of Tana. It is really quite close to, say, the Palissandre Hotel, say a ten minute walk, but is hard to find as there is no sign outside, the only indication being a lit gateway and a security guy. Inside it is a very personal experience. There is no menu, rather you get the five or six courses that Mariette wants to cook that evening. The food is somewhere between very good and outstanding, the service is great, if you speak French you can discuss each course with Mariette and there is an excellent piano player providing live music. Overall the whole thing is a unique experience, but not everyone might like the highly personal nature of the whole thing and the fixed menu. Would definitely recommend for a try if you want to experience something really different in Tana.
