“CORNER ROOM”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

The Hotel de France, at modest prices ($80 for B & B), gives you location, corner rooms on request (103, 203, 303), and three eateries with good continental fare, especially the Poivre O for dinner.

Internet connectivity is a bit of a problem, but persistence pays.

For the rare English speaker, they have BBC on cable. Otherwise, you pick up BBC on the FM.
Street traders outside, but I prefer to go to the Lisy on rue de la Mausolee for objets d'art. Keep a hand on your wallet. Ladies, keep an eye on your purse.

The reception changes USD at a favorable rate if you run out of local currency.

Room Tip: Go for the corner rooms: 103, 203, 303.

+ great service (helped us arrange car rental in no-time), caring for tourists
+ ok rooms
+ great location
+ felt safe

- quite expensive
- breakfast not ok
- restaurant food very low quality (got sick from eating their steak....), and aweful service. Don't eat in, there are so many other nice restaurants nearby.

It's a large old colonial building right on the Independence Avenue, so a lively and busy area, I was told to beware of pickpockets. The rooms are large and clean, but I had 102 at the rear and the aircon was awful. Comfortable bed, good shower, no fridge, not much noise from other rooms was a plus. The restaurant is very good, tasty food and good service at a moderate price. It took over an hour from the airport due to the bad traffic.

Room Tip: Check the aircon works properly, maybe choose the south side to be quieter.

This comfortable little three star hotel in downtown Tana looks out onto the Avenue of Independance. A lot of street life and small trading go on in front of the front door. Don't venture out flashing a lot of money; the pickpockets are there to relieve you of it. There are splendid views of the town from the corner rooms (103, 203, 303) for those who don't mind the street noise.

Walking in from the street, there is one nice restaurant with light fare on your right. It doubles as the breakfast room. The O Poivre Vert is to the left of the reception; pizzas and rather ordinary continental cuisine. Both of these restaurants let you put their food bill on your room bill.

The rooms are clean, modern and comfortable, if not deluxe. Staffers are friendly and helpful.

Internet connectivity is reliable. Annoyingly, you have to retype your password every time you reboot.

Lots of French language TV on cable; their BBC link was not working when I was there in December 2013. I picked up the BBC on FM, 89.2.

I was told there was a lot of political turbulence here. Though we are two weeks before the presidential runoff, I saw no signs of disorder on the streets.

I paid $70 per night in the off season, B & B. A bargain, but the government is under sanctions. I'm sure the prices will rebound if and when they get an internationally recognized government to replace the current regime.

Room Tip: Go for the corner rooms, which are bathed in sunlight. If you don't like the noise, ask for 203...

I have stayed at Hotel de France in Antanarivo several times. It´s a calm oasis in a chaotic city. Unless you´re able to pay a fantasillion a night, this is the most secure place to stay. They have to good restaurants and quite all right rooms, all of them with air condition. Do go!

Room Tip: Avoid the backyard
