Lokanga Boutique Hotel
Ranked #11 of 59 Hotels in Antananarivo
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 29 August 2014

It is not difficult to see why this hotel is number 1 on Tripadvisor in Antananarivo. We stayed at the Lokanga on the first night of our honeymoon. It had been something of a culture shock arriving in Antananarivo - the only city in the world with no traffic lights and apparently no pavements either! The Lokanga was a complete contrast from the hustle and bustle of the airport - tucked away down a long flight of steps which means it is totally secluded, yet with the most spectacular views of the city. It has only six rooms so it feels very exclusive. The staff could not have been more helpful, and bent over backwards to make our short stay special from the moment we arrived. Fabiola, the manager, was utterly charming, as were Ellouard and Vero.
Our room on the first floor had a gloriously comfortable four poster bed with mosquito nets and fabulously soft Egyptian cotton sheets. We had a huge veranda, again with spectacular views. The small sitting room had a cosy log fire in the evening (just about cold enough to need it, and a lovely touch) and the food was astonishingly good with an excellent evening menu and a hearty breakfast to send us on our way. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: I believe you can't book a specific room but having spoken to other customers I don't think...

What a treat to stay here! The view is OUTSTANDING, the customer service unfaultable, the food in the restaurant superb and the room absolutely gorgeous. Attention to detail abounds here. After a 15 hour delay by Kenya Airways, the hotel receptionist stayed in constant contact with us, co-ordinating the driver who was to pick us up at the hotel. They were very friendly, professional, efficient and welcoming. The room was absolutely beautiful with so much love and care. The bed was divine, the furnishings gorgeous. We had a room with a little balcony. I am very aware of noise but although we could hear noise from the restaurant below us for 30 minutes or so before the close of night, it wasn't a problem. Also, worth noting but not a problem for us is the toilet is at the far end of the room and not in an actual separate bathroom - it is artfully hidden by a well decorated divider. Not a problem for us but might be for others. There are separate toilets down below on the main floor if one wants a bit of privacy! Worth noting, on making the booking with Lokgana, it was very easy - they were swift and responsive. We also stayed one night at another boutique hotel in Tana and their responsiveness was dreadful in comparison to Lokanga. Also, the driver Lokanga arranged for us was excellent and very trustworthy and knowledgeable with excellent English.

Room Tip: We arrived fairly late (in time for dining in the delicious restaurant - absolutely superb food, Fre...

We had the privilege of staying in this hotel on three occasions during our trip to Madagascar for a total of 4 nights - each stay we had a different room which was great as each room is so different decorated an eclectic manner with a variety of vintage items. The beds themselves are very comfy and the standard of cleanliness is excellent. The staff are friendly and very helpful - nothing is too much trouble. The restaurant has an extensive menu and everything we had was great. The views and balconies allow you to relax and enjoy the sunshine. We would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a little escape from the city or busy travelling trip for a little luxurious relaxation.

My teenage daughter and I stayed here three times as our base in Tana during a tour of Madagascar. We loved the hotel for the view, good restaurant, comfy beds, and warm welcome. We highly recommend this hotel and would stay there again.

We had the privilege of staying at this hotel for two nights one our way into Madagascar and again on our way out. Staff could not have been friendlier or more welcoming. The food was excellent too. Rooms were decorated individually and had a great colonial feel to them. I can't recommend this hotel enough.

Lokanga is situated atop the highest hill in the city so you are able to take it the views of the entire city and beyond. The outdoor patio and balcony are especially great for afternoon sun or a glass of wine at sunset. I believe we may have been the only guests there the night we stayed, so the staff was especially attentive to us and our dinner was very romantic with candles and great music. We were on our honeymoon, so this was an especially nice touch. The food was outstanding both for dinner and breakfast. We stayed in the Baroque Suite which was sizable, but you should be aware the bathtub and toilet are not in a separate room. They have created as much privacy as possible, but I think it's helpful for guests to know this. There is no shower in this room. Since we were there during the winter month for Madagascar (late June), we did not experience any mosquito problems, so it did not matter that we did not have a net over the bed. The only drawback is that you are so high up from the rest of the city that it precludes you from walking around much to explore - the walk back up would be exhausting. The benefit is the amazing view. Overall, we had a very pleasant and enjoyable stay at Lokanga and would recommend it for anyone traveling to Tana.
