“Reasonable but nothing special”
Reviewed 6 February 2014

We spent separate 3 nights here , whilst visiting other parts of madagascar .The rooms - are ok , ask for new part of hotel floor 5 and up.Breakfast is fine , reasonable selection , the gastronomic experience meal is also fair value for money .In a very safe part of town , one can walk safely about , the spa is a bit dated and jaded - but as good as it gets .
Dinner service slow , but food fair value .
Kettles in rooms - but no coffee /milk or tea , wi-fi only in lobby area , tv channels very limited unless fluent in French

Room Tip: 5th floor and above - not near lifts

stayed here past 4 visits in 2 years. its good to be near to commercial centers when on biz trips. There are other hotels; but i guess in every way; this one takes the cake.
Indoor pool is surely small; but quick morning dips & also multiple laps before dinner and the spa is worth the price one pays. Spa / Salon services can expand; rather it wud help them with more biz if they did, esp for gents.
try the next door karaoke if time permits from ur biz schedule. Great places to enjoy Pizza and really great great INDIAN food.

Room Tip: choose the old building; its more quieter than the new rooms in the tower. (Caryon wing?) But also f...

Over the course of a two week trip around Madagascar, we stayed at The Hotel Colbert on three different nights. While we did stay in the Caryon Wing (which I think has been recently renovated), the rooms vary widely in terms of quality - in one we had decent a/c and the other two times the rooms were barely air conditioned at all. The mattresses are quite thin, pretty common in many of the places we stayed, making the beds a bit uncomfortable. The pool area also gets extremely crowded. The fine dining restaurant, as well as the casual restaurant in the lobby were both good choices. The real issue for us was on our final stay at the Colbert where we had secured a room for day use before our flight late in the evening. We arrived back at the hotel around 4 p.m. and when we checked-in to our room, we were told we would have to vacate the room by 8 p.m. (we were being picked up at 10 p.m. for our airport transfer). Having the leave the room earlier than anticipated was an inconvenience especially before a 20+ hour journey home. All international flights leave Tana late in the evening so if you do book this hotel for day use, be sure to check on what that means.

Room Tip: Either request a room with good a/c or ask for one with a porch

Not a resident but popped in for Sunday lunch. Finding a table in the restaurant of the best hotel in Tana was hard. The SADC Election observers had established camp well truly. If they observe the elections as closely as the observed the refills of food arriving at the buffet then Malagasy democracy is in safe hands. (why do I doubt what I have just written?). SADC gluttons aside the buffet is very good, basic menu is 25,000 ariary, and then you can top up with various meat dishes...prawns, chicken and Zebu, with your bill rising to about 55,000 ariary should you go the whole hog and order the grilled langoustines. So, come AFTER the elections (25th October) and have a great Sunday buffet.

Great colonial ambiance, wonderful spa and very good restaurant.
A must to feel out of time.
We only spent a day waiting for our flight, the room on the 3 star area was adequate, way better than we feared from some comments on the web.
It is pricy though, european price.
If you have to spend some days relaxing in tana, and that you are not short on cash, that is a good pick.
There is even a casino if you have a few buck left.

Room Tip: 4 stars sound great, but we found the 3 stars really acceptable, large and clean.

We arrived at Hotel Corbert on Saturday 24th August. The receptionist was efficient and friendly as we were one of the first of our party to check in.

We checked in as our rooms were ready. When I arrived in my room I felt it was dusty and dark. I had also requested that they do not have any feathers in the room as I am highly allergic. Unfortunately they could not change the pillows as they only had pillows with feathers so they suggested I move to the La Varangue down the road which was a far more acceptable Hotel.

The Hotel Corbert cashiers also do not carry large amounts of cash so they could only exchange small values of Euro for Ariary which does not help. There is an exchange bureau about 100m away which they did not tell us about as I presume they wanted to do the exchange. They were all polite and helpful. Most staff could speak rudimentary English.

Room Tip: Apparently there may be some rooms that are better on the new side of the hotel.

This trap of a hotel is unavoidable, if booked for a mid-size conference in Madagascar. There simply is no alternative. The rooms' decor and access to hot water is not for the faint-hearted. Be brisk about requesting another room- everyone else will. Only Wifi access is in the Hotel Lobby. Avoid the hotel kitchen entirely, if you can. A few steps outside the entrance is a french Patisserie, which will sustain you for a few days. The hotel is a magnet for roadside sellers of trinkets and women holding up their abused children to collect your sympathy dollars. Utterly appalling.
The staff are kind and really try to please the guests, even though their very rudimentary english skills trip them up. The Hotel is good for your soul. It will remind you to revisit your values and sense of humour.

Room Tip: Ask for a view, which takes you to the better side. ask for the new side of the hotel, which has bee...
