I moved from the Hotel Corbert to La Varangue because I felt that Hotel Corbert’s rooms were dusty and dark.

When checking in, the staff at La Varangue were really helpful. The room was not as large as the Hotel Corbert but was clean, comfortable and of a higher standard. The gardens were beautiful and staff very accommodating. Water pressure was strong and had constant hot water. There was also free WiFi anywhere in the hotel.

Breakfast was also very good. I would stay here again.

My 18-year old son and I spent our first night in Madagascar at La Varangue, and it was a wonderful welcome to the country. The entire hotel, including lobby, bar and restaurant, are filled with antiques and other quirky artifacts. Our room was on the first floor, directly at the top of the staircase, and it had a pleasant view. My only issue with the room was the lack of a mosquito net for the smaller bed in the room. We had perhaps our best dinner during our Madagascar stay at the restaurant. La Varangue is a great way to start or end your stay in this amazing country.

We spent our last night in Tana at La Varangue, and it was a great move. After 2 weeks of travelling, we were delighted to find this hotel was full of charm and quirkiness and different to any other hotel we stayed in. The restaurant is really excellent, the Chef is amazing and their wine list was also some of the best we'd seen so far. The hotel is eclectic and more like a museum of curios and antiques. Its been carefully thought through and the displays of La Parisien colonial magazine covers in the bar chart the milestones in the struggle the French had to occupy Madagascar - they are fascinating to look at. The location is tucked away next to the beautiful presidential palace and well worth a lovely walk around (in daylight of course!) A great place to stay in Tana.

Room Tip: The room up the stairs on the right over looking the front entrance is nice, as you can see the clas...

We spent several nights at Varangue Hotel and we thought it was excellant. The rooms were very clean and modern, the staff helpful and friendly, and the restaurant outstanding. As a matter of fact, one of our dinners there would be among the best we have had in any country. Strong recommend it.

This place is full of character as soon as you walk in. Loads of antiques everywhere and a nice colonial feel. Restaurant is excellent.
Stayed in various rooms. The suite is amazing for the sheer amount of space, the only downside being there's no mosquito net for some reason!? Other rooms have them and you need them.

Room Tip: They're all different but we liked #22. The suite is pretty amazing for the sheer amount of spac...

This is an amazing little hotel in the centre of Antananarivo. Friendly and welcoming with a great menu and chef in their quaint restaurant. The owner is clearly a collector, for around the hotel are displays of binoculars, cameras, lamps, telephones from another era, largely brass and hanging from the walls. Rooms are clean and appropriately decorated, in fact on our return to stay on our last night we were given a suite consisting of three rooms and an enormous bathroom. We discovered that the chef had been identified by some awarding authority as one of the five best in the world, which explained the need to book a table and why the restaurant was full each night. Five minutes away is the plush Colbert Hotel which has a great coffee bar where you can buy delicious ice-cream sundaes and great sweet and savoury pastries for lunch or tea. So, well worth staying at this characterful hotel.

What a fantastic stay. A room with a view, a comfortable bed, and the best risotto in town. I slept like a baby and when I woke up I walked down just a small flight of stairs to the best dining experience in Antananarivo. Sit inside or outside, or order to your room for a private dinner, I tried them all and every experience was wonderful. Brush up on your French, but remember you are in a French speaking country so this should come as no surprise. Learning some basic French before you come to Madagascar is just respectful to the culture and the Malagasy people.
La Varangue is within walking distance to the market, shops, banks, and a fine bakery is just a short up the hill on the right.
