“The best in Lilongwe”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

We stayed here only for a night on a short stop over and it was great. We had an a frame chalet which was comfortable and neat, the pool was even better and although it was mid winter, it was still hot enough for us to take a dip. If you ever find you ever find yourself in Lilongwe then I would recommend this backpackers.

Room Tip: All rooms are great

We stayed at Mabuya twice for two nights each time. It is a great place to stay, the staff are friendly and helpful.

The rooms we had were clean if not especially spacious. The beds were comfortable and the shared bathrooms were fairly clean. The showers were a little inconsistent.

When we ate there the food was tasty and the bar affordable.

Room Tip: Both the Chalets and the A-Frame rooms were good. We didn't stay in the Dorms.

Although it is located on the edge of town, Mabuya Camp is frequented by backpackers, local members and expats. I stayed in a six-person dorm room, which clean, spacious and comfortable, There are bulletin boards with lots of good travel, volunteer and other information useful to travelers. What I enjoyed most was hanging out in the reception lounge where lots of people hang out listening to really good music; chatting, having a beer; watching TV; and generally, just relaxing. If you are in Lilongwe and need a place to stay, you can't go wrong by choosing this place.

I stayed at Mabuya for three nights. The best thing you can say about this hostel is that is cheap, however, everything is dirty and requires a good scrub down. There were elements to the hostel that could make your stay irritable - ants pretty much every where, including in your bed - to potentially dangerous - such as the torn or ill fitting mosquito nets as noted by other reviewers. The staff and the other backpackers were lovely though. Smoking is also permitted indoors so if you came from a country where this is illegal, this make be a bit uncomfortable.

Room Tip: The A frames, and tents all have ant problems and are close to the roads.

Hi there,

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry that you had problems with ants, we have been doing battle for some time but have been reluctant to fumigate due to the effect it has on the other wildlife. However this weekend the entire site has been sprayed and gassed so the ants should be a thing of the past.
The mosquito nets were all replaced in the last two months, apologies that you found one with new holes.
We hope you enjoy the rest of your travels

This family run business offers so much more than the average backpacker lodge.
The staff are all lovely and the variety of Western and Malawian food is of a very high standard.
No problem is too big for the amazing couple Tom and Janey, who run Mabuya, or their colleague Matt. The most genuine and helpful people ever.
The location and facilities are excellent, the gardens are pretty and the swimming pool clean.
We spent our honeymoon in Malawi and used Mabuya as a base. They organised the most incredibly cheap and excellent safari to Zambia; value for money which including quite luxurious accommodation and seamless organisation.
A home from home, and a soulful place you'll never forget.

This is probably the best place to stay if you want to meet other backpackers. You probably only gonna stay one or two nights in Lilongwe, because there's not much to do around here. If you are going to Nkhata Bay, many backpackers stop here for a night before they go, which makes it a perfect place to hook up with other people heading the same direction as you. The staff is very friendly and can give many travel advices, especially Janey. It's walking distance to town (15 minutes) where you can get a mini-bus to get anywhere in or outside Lilongwe.

We spent one night here while passing through Lilongwe. The pool looked inviting, the a frames are gorgeous and there are great common areas, however, the cleanliness left a lot to be desired. The common areas, though neat, could have done with a thorough scrubbing. The sheets on the beds in the a frame did not look like the freshest I have ever seen, and between that and trying (but failing) to fit the mosquito nets over the bed in a way that they would be effective, yet not be simply laying directly on top of us, we ended up setting up our tent within the a frame in order to have a comfortable night's sleep and be safe from the mosquitoes. There was a kitchen for guest use, however, it did not look well stocked or super clean. The showers were great, though!
