“BE AWARE! Don't even consider staying here!”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

This is not the mufasa backpackers in Lilongwe as mentioned in the Lonely planet! The old Mufasa backpackers was shut down by the government and is now called MufaTsa.

There is no swimming pool and the Christian owner doesn't want to sell beers so the bar is shut down. COCKROACHES everywhere in the kitchen. If you want to toast a slice of bread you first have to shake the toaster so all cockroaches come out. absolutely grose!

The second night ALL OUR STUFF GOT STOLEN!
We decided to go to a restaurant. We were the only guest staying in Mufatsa and decided to leave our values in the locked room. Because there were no other guests and there is a security guard we considered that to be safe.

We came back after two hours and found all our stuff on the ground in the room. My reflex camera and zoom lens, tablet, friends credit cards, sunglasses, external battery, chargers, E-reader, cash money, etc was stolen.

The security guard and the receptionist declared that there were some new guests that checked in with a false name and booked the room in front of us. They sent the security guard for some airtime to town, stole our stuff and left again.

In reality the staff was involved. The security guard called his two accomplices to tell them we left to the restaurant and sent himself for some airtime to have an alibi.

After that the manager came and left again to find a police officer. A police officer came, obvious drunk, to deal with the situation, but his way of handling the situation was a big joke.

The manager promised to sort it out in the morning but it took 3 days before we saw him back.

The manager runs the place together with his sister but you barely see them, if they come they are just there to have some free food the staff makes and it's sad to see that they totally don't care about the place or about the guests.

We asked them to pay back the little cost of our accommodation but they refused. They even negotiated and gave us one night for free. ( we had to stay two more extra nights because this happened.) The manager said this is not the place we were expecting it to be. This is not a five star hotel he said. I concluded that he finds normal that if you stay over there your stuff can be stolen from the staff. The managers sister even laughed with us. Customer care Zero in this place.

To conclude I can only advice to the owner to fire the two managers and the security guard that was on duty that evening as they do not even consider to work to make this place a basic backpackers again. They totally don't care, If not this place will end without guests.

Also this place has nothing to do with Mufasa backpackers in Monkey bay which is a nice place to stay!

This place is quite depressing, they really need to update it. The bathroom was dirty and full of spiders/webs, although I can't say they didn't clean because everyday they were scrubbing the floors outside, just don't know why they didn't do the bathroom. The staff were friendly enough. We stayed in a double room and were told only 1 breakfast was provided, although in the end we got 2. The breakfast was good for a free meal, and we ate dinner there which was pretty good for the price.

I have written over 30 reviews for trip adviser and this is the first 'terrible' I have given. I have been traveling in Africa staying in budget accommodation for almost 5 months & our stay at Mufasa was the most expensive & worst experience we have had.

Firstly it should be noted that this not the same place as in the lonely planet guide reviews. The original Mufasa Backpacker Lodge no longer exists. Any reviews on trip adviser previous to July 2013 should be disregarded.

This place is not good value for money and the staff cannot be trusted. We had a good SLR camera stolen from our locked room.

(We moved to The Budget Hotel nearer to the mall (less than a kilometer from Mufasa) which is much better value, only 10,000kwa ($20). The staff there are lovely and the rooms come with AC, hot water, and are very clean. The breakfast is better too!! )

For a double room in Mufasa it costs 12,000kwa ($24) which includes only one breakfast, despite the fact that you are paying for 2 people. This fact is written nowhere & we were only informed of it after we had checked in.

The rooms are shabby & old. The bathrooms are dirty and there was no hot water despite constant promises. The paid wifi hotspot was broken (it had been broken for 4 days but they still let us buy a voucher!!). We were given 2 breakfasts in the end after outlining the fact that their one breakfast per room policy wasn't clear however the breakfast was measly & disappointing.

I want this review to be fair, and so on the up side the reception staff were very nice and helpful, the towels were great & the laundry service is very good and cheap!

However, our main issue with Mufasa Lodge was that camera was stolen out of our locked room when we went out for dinner. We realized the next morning and brought it to the attention of the management. Initially the management was helpful. She questioned all the staff & assured us she was doing all she could to help us. When everybody claimed to know nothing it was decided that the police be called. We all ended up spending the day at the station being questioned & giving statements. The camera of course never showed up but at least we got a statement from the police for our insurance company. We aired our disappointment with the manager in the afternoon only to be told that she believed her staff & she could offer us nothing more as it was a matter for the police & nothing to do with her or her establishment. We suggested the least they could offer was to offer a discount on the room to which she consulted the owner & refused. She became increasingly rude and defensive & in the end after wasting our only day in Lilongwe we left, without our most valuable luggage item.

Despite efforts to try and talk to the owner, she never came, nor would she speak to us on the phone. Eventually she came down the morning after we had left and our friends spoke with her. She then accused us of fabricating the whole incident for insurance fraud.

It was a horrible experience between the incident, dealing with the management and the police bureaucracy. Needless to say I would not recommend staying here.

Lonely planet describes this as one of the best busget stays in Lilongwe. However Mufasa has relocated since their last review. It is now a little further away from the centre, but still within walking distance.
We stayed in a double room, which was quite pricey for what we found... The sheets were very dirty and the moskito net completely broken and useless. We had hundreds of moskitoes in our room.
We ordered some food after our long travel in the evening. They basically had only one choice. The food was nice but we waited for more than one hour. The bar was not really equipped so the only choice was beer or coke.
Also, they cheated with the exchange rate, which definitely leaves a bad memory...

Stayed here for one night on a School trip, and I can say i was impressed. We stayed in dorms, which were slightly cramped for space, but most hostels around were like this. We were lucky to have the showers & toilets right outside our room, and the showers were amazing (compared to many other hostels we stayed at). They were clean, hot water wasn't an issue and also spacey! The gardens in the hostel were a nice area to relax, and unfortunatley we didn't get to relax at the bar in the evenings. The hostel staff were also very helpful, and sorted out taxi issues for us to a nearby restaurant. The location was good, it was walking distance to a supermarket and the craft market. If you went a bit further, there were some upmarket malls you could go to aswell (which had great restuarants). All in all, i would recommend staying here for a comfortable stay.

Mufasa lodge, Lilongwe, monkey bay And cape mclear, was Seriously our 3 homes in Malawi. The one in Lilongwe was the one where we always took a shower, the best showers in whole south, east and middle Africa!
Breakfast is fine, not to much not to less.
If you stay here, don't hesitate to go to the other 2 at the lake aswell!!!
