“Great place to spend an afternoon in Lilongwe”
Review of Nature Sanctuary

Nature Sanctuary
Reviewed 28 May 2014

This is a sanctuary (not a zoo) and so the animal population naturally fluctuates as animals are rehabilitated. A key objective is to release those that are suitable back into their natural and native environment. As long as one understands this, it is very enjoyable.

Also, if you get the chance, they have a lovely market in the sanctuary garden on the last Saturday morning of every month. This has a selection of local fresh and specialty foods and some truly superb crafts and art items. Look for Molten Blue art items. They are made from recycled aluminum and are gorgeous. Best of all, you can buy Linga...a truly amazing local speciality wine that is its own thing...kind of like a cross between a dry Sherry and a brandy.

Be careful to distinguish the sanctuary (poor) on one side of the road from the wildlife centre (good) on the other. The sanctuary used to have a cramped zoo, now most animals have been moved to the much better and more spacious wildlife rescue centre. This review for the wildlife centre.

Interesting tour of the animals (not a huge number) takes about 1 hour. Also quite a bit of trail near the river where we spent another couple of hours. Amazing for a city centre.

Being close to Lilongwe one can easily walk there, one of the many interesting views was the lioness that had only one eye. I salute the sanctuary for taking care of the lioness. The guides are very informative and its truly a great place to spend a morning or Afternoon. Highly recommend
