“poor service, bad food”
Reviewed 11 February 2014 via mobile

I stayed at Sunbird Capital four nights and was extremely disapointed. Payed 175$ for an "executive" room and both the room and the service were far from what you'd expect for this price. The service is very very slow and not good, internet working by intermitence. Rooms have no charm at all but at least mine was clean.

Just returned home following a two week stay as part of a business trip. Hotel was better than I expected. Had a deluxe room overlooking the pool and was very happy with location, decor and cleanliness. Surprisingly comfy bed and no sign of any bugs. Attentive staff kept it clean and tidy. Restaurant area was good and happy with the quality of food served. Staff very friendly and attentive. Some areas were tired looking particularly around the pool area. To be fair though I had no complaints and enjoyed my stay. Would definitely recommend for business travellers who are not looking for top spec but a comfortable and clean facility with good food and friendly staff. The Bar was a bit off putting at night though - appeared to provide extra curricular services for men looking for a bit of company.... But I suppose the same can be said of many such hotels worldwide!

Room Tip: Upgrade. Rooms overlooking the pool are bright and sunny.

I had a room on the executive level which I think had been recently renovated. Rooms were a nice mix of modern and traditional, bathrooms spotless, and cold individually controlled AC which when combined with a plush uber comfortable bed and extra pillows, meant a delightful night's sleep. When I arrived, the phone didn't work, but they quickly came and fixed the issue.

Hallways could use some work, and there was one spot with a chronic leak on the route from the lobby to my room. Not a problem a strategically placed bucket can't fix. The entire interior of the complex was open to the air, so the only air conditioned areas were the rooms themselves.

Breakfast was amazing. A great buffet with a cook on hand to fry up your eggs or omelet on demand. It was never too busy, and I enjoyed a full English breakfast every morning. I also enjoyed the variety of juices on tap, and a good selection of breads and cereals. Only complaint is they never had decaf coffee, which I admit is an unusual request, despite it being on the menu.

Room service is the only area that needs lots of work. The first night was fine, food showed up within half an hour. Later during my stay however, I had to call back three times for a pizza! Each time I called, they gave a standard answer, "oh it will be another 10-15 minutes"... eventually after an hour and half I finally was able to eat. I didn't order room service again.

I had one meal in the hotel restaurant, and had no complaints. Good variety and great taste/presentation. Wines are a bit expensive and all from South Africa, but remember what region of the world you are in!

Conference services were attentive and professional. There were never any technical issues that the staff didn't quickly address and correct. They even found me some decaf coffee when I told them about my breakfast plight.

One more thing, make sure to enjoy several bottles of Kuchi Kuchi beer during your stay.

Room Tip: Executive level (300's) were the most recently renovated, make sure your room is overlooking the...

I think the Sunbird Capital is considered one of the better hotels in Lilongwe but I found it to be less than desirable. A couple of good things: the rooms are comfortable and the staff is extremely pleasant. Unfortunately, my list of bad things far outweigh the good. THE biggest problem is the food. It is pretty gross. I tried the continental breakfast and the entire fruit table sat uncovered swarming with fruit flies. Not fruit with peels. Fresh, unpeeled and sliced fruit sat open with fruit flies blanketing them. The yogurt and milks were barely chilled and there was still and hour or more left of breakfast. I tried multiple dishes for dinner in the restaurants and through room service. Each and every one of those meals were bad. Additionally, you pay quite a bit for this bad food. My solution was to take a quick 5mins taxi ride to a nearby cluster of good restaurants but this quick ride cost as much as many meals. If you feel comfortable walking at night, which I didn't, this walk would likely take 20-30mins with inclines. This leads me to another drawback which is that the hotel isn't close to much of anything except Parliament and the large Chinese built conference center. Another thing to be aware of is that the internet can be spotty. It is SkyBand which has to be pre-paid for by buying scratch cards with codes on them. If you have a laptop and a smart phone or multiple devices that use internet you then have to buy multiple cards because the codes can only be used for one device at once. My last major complaint is that it sounded like my room was right beneath an industrial washing machine or something. If I didn't have my air conditioning unit on, the noise was terribly noticeable even during the night.

In the end, I stayed here at the prior recommendation of a colleague but I don't think I would stay here again even if in Lilongwe for business.

It's a little better than the sister hotel, Sunbird Lilongwe. It's cleaner. Located away from the busy old town. Slightly dated but keeping up with the times. Please change the old tellies! We also got a complimentary car wash! The food is fine, nothing to write home about. There's a strange Chinese-built empty shopping mall (Golden Peacock) full of cheap Chinese products. It's an okay hotel.

We stayed at the Sunbird Capital during the first week of December and it was wonderful. It is clean, the staff is friendly and the food is very nice - especially the local fish, which they cook in different ways everyday. It is also accessible to different places around Lilongwe. One can walk to the supermarket as well as the Parliament building and Banda's monument from the hotel. The best thing is that if you take a cab to Lake Malawi you can sleep over at the Sunbird over there, which makes paying easy - less admin!

My first visit to Lilongwe was made wonderful by this great hotel, it is an old but very well looked after hotel, the rooms were comfortable but a replacement of the TV's in the rooms would go a long way. The staff was very friendly and courteous. Next time I visit Lilongwe this hotel will do just fine. Zikomo achimwene.
