Not a glitzy expense account place, yet this hotel is often used for smallish NGO conferences and the like. It's a couple miles out of town but everything you need is at hand. Local civil society types probably also know about the great Indian food in the hotel restaurant, the cleanliness of the public areas and unfailingly courteous helpful staff, the grocery store and ATM right next door, and the AXA express bus to Blantyre that loads right in the parking lot, shortcutting a tiresome trip at to the downtown bus station for the traveling urbanite class that travels between Malawi's two major government and commercial cities. If these things are important to you, this a the place to stay. Downsides: 1) high and very hard sided bathtub was real hazard to take a shower in; 2)can't use your international credit card, 3) no alcohol served. After trying a few other hotels in town, I came to really appreciate this place.

I stayed here for 3 nights for a work conference that was held in a much more expensive hotel down the road. I chose the Pacific because it was affordable but I regret that decision. I should have known by the empty parking lot that this was not a winner.

Positives:
- comfortable bed/ linens
- great shower/ water pressure
- indian food in restaurant

Negatives:
- many broken things in my room (broken floor tiles covered up by a rug...real classy)
- light bulbs out
- dark, narrow hallways
- poor breakfast, even ran out of food 2 of the 3 times I ate there.
- value for money, too expensive

Avoid this place. Spend the extra $20 and go to the Golden Peacock down the road- night and day difference. I did for my 4th night and I wish I would have made the switch sooner.

I have to agree with the other reviewers: the Pacific Hotel will never win any awards for charm. The rooms are a bit dark, the lack of curtains in the bathroom is indeed disturbing, and it's true that it's a "dry" hotel, which I discovered to my chagrin when I tried to order a beer with dinner. That said, most hotels if not all hotels in Lilongwe are overpriced and lacking in many ways. Pacific's rooms are decent sized, the beds are comfortable, the hot water was good, the staff is okay, and the breakfast was edible. Most importantly, the price is not totally out of line with the place. It's conveniently located for business and gives a nice discount for NGOs. It's true that there's nowhere to go in the neighborhood at night (and the hotel should put lights outside of its gate as the area just outside the gate is very dark and I'm told by my Malawian colleagues attracts unsavory characters). But one can do a lot worse in Lilongwe.

There were some good things about the Pacific: my room was spacious and clean with excellent air-con, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the location is good for the Central Business District.
However, for an upmarket hotel, there were an number of small issues with room: the power socket for the desk was falling of the wall, without any drapes on the windows using the bathroom felt somewhat public and the tiles in the bathroom weren't entirely attached to the floor. The chair and sofa weren't attached to their frames either, which made sitting down more entertaining than should have been. Irritatingly, you could not switch off the reading lights from the bed. Oh, and the remote for the TV didn't work. I didn't like the overly dim lighting in the room and the narrow, claustrophobic corridors either.

MULTIPLE ORGAN FAILURE

For $75 per night, b&b, I expected more, even in a 2 star hotel

Do you have Internet cards?
“We are out, but you can go across to the Capital Hotel and buy from them.”

Do you have change?
“No, do you have small dollar banknotes?”

Can you stamp the receipt?
“No, our director is in China, and he keeps the stamp.”

If the director ever gets back from China. s/he should have a look at why the reception staffers are so reluctant to enter billing and payment data into their computer.

The only thing the Pacific has going for it is the location. If they could have inconvenienced their clients by moving, they would have. Customer service is 11 on their list of 10 priorities.

Room Tip: Little to choose here.

This is a decent, alcohol free hotel located in the center of Lilongwe's Central Business District, next to the USAID Mission and near the large city business tower where the African Development Bank and other diplomatic and international firms have located their offices. I suspect that if the hotel had a bar and served alcohol with its meals at its very decent and affordable Indian restuarant, many more would patronize the hotel.

OK, by European and North American standards, this is a three star hotel. The three or four storey building's architecture is 1980s with two wings off a central cooridor. The rooms are decent, fairly modern with acceptable furnishings. Free cable TV with the usual MNET Africa offerings is in each room. The internet is not free but solid, one has to purchase pre-paid cards, but once on, it's ok. The free breakfast is a proper English breakfast. At $70 per night per standard room, corporate rate, this was perfect for myself and my engineer. We walked to our project site and picked up our water, sodas, beer and snacks and occassional take away meal at the large grocery / department store right next door to the hotel. The central bank of Malawi is around back of the hotel, walking distance, and the new commercial neighborhood that is coming to define the CBD is nearby, a 15 minute walk. Several of the major airlines have their offices in the commercial building just 3 minutes away. There are some local lunch eateries including a pretty good grilled chicken place located in a coverted ocean container in the middle of the lot adjacent to the grocery store.

The CBD has no nightlife or other restuarants to speak of, and in fact, Lilongwe is not a hopping town. It is a somewhat staid, decent place with decent, respectful people so one is not really missing alot at night by staying at the Pacific or in the Central Business District. Taxis are readily available in front of the grocery store. Lilongwe has a new Chinese hotel about to open, and two or three Sun hotels which do hold to an international branded standard. OK, this hotel is not one of those other places, but the Pacific doesn't carry the cost burden of those branded hotels either. There always seems to be some rooms available and the NGOs do use this hotel for conferences and many of them stay at the hotel. If the CDB is where you intend to do your work whicle in Lilongwe, this is a decent business hotel to stay.
