“OK But Not Great”
Reviewed 2 August 2008

I want to inject a note of reality after the last two rave reviews. I am more inclined to agree with the reviewer from January. The setting is lovely (on the river) and it's very pleasant to sit on the verandah and have breakfast or drink a beer. The staff is friendly and the wi-fi works well. There are also a couple of computers in the lobby and you buy cards from reception which have a password and code.

But this is not an upscale or luxury hotel. The rooms have televison and air conditioning but the beds are not particularly comfortable. The shower is basic. I had an ok time and would certainly come back. But I don't want anyone to have the impression that this is a top-ranking hotel. It's a perfectly acceptable mid-range place. which is a bit far from the center of the city.

Hotel Mande is a great place for escaping the buzz of Bamako.
Extremely nicely located at the Niger river its a perfect place to relax. But: There is no heating of the pool so its to cold to take a swim during winter months. The outdoot restaurant is great befoe the mosquitos take over in the evening. The service and standard could be better but its still my number one in Bamako:)

I've stayed at the Mande on two occasions, first at the beginning of my month long stay in Mali, and second at the end of it. I have stayed in hotels and campements up and down the country from Bamako to Timbuktu and back, and i can surely say that our stay at hotel Mande was fantastic. the rooms were lovely, and the pool was nice. To have the best experiance you must wake up early, go to the main building to get a complimentary breakfast of fruit, coffee, deli meats and baguettes, and various juices and water, then take your breakfast and go out on the veranda, sit off to the end and watch the fishermen and other boaters (collecting mud and sand), slowly, almost magically emerge, seemingly out of nowhere.

This is a hotel that appears to have seen better times.
We stayed for one night on two separate occasions. Both bedrooms were in need of redecoration, even by local standards. The double beds were tiny, marginally above a large single. The food was mediocre and the service unhelpful. Even more so than elsewhere in Mali, obtaining change from a small note took an age.
On the positive side, the location by the river and the tranquil pool area provided a pleasant and relaxing break from the city. Our bathroom was large, the water hot and the air conditioning functioned.

I stayed on two occasions and found that the size of the rooms was variable - get one with a view if you can. The hotel is by the river and quite tranquil and sitting outside in the restaurant over the water was lovely. There is live music on some evenings. The staff in reception and in the restaurant were helpful but not those by the pool. It is not a bad place to stay for a limited time on arrival and before departure from Mali but would not suit the business traveller.
