“Hanging in there during conflict”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 January 2013

This hotel is better than average for a hotel in Africa. Mali is a country in conflict so they are doing well despite it. My room was average, the bed was comfortable, the bath was ample and there were plenty of amenities. The hotel is still going through renovation. The restaurant had a small menu but the food was tasty. The breakfast buffet was good. The basic salad I had for lunch was one of the best I've had in a long time. The beef medallions with sauteed potatoes were very good. WiFi was available all over the hotel. Once I signed in, I could go anywhere without losing my connection.

Situated just across the bridge of the Niger River, the Salam is on the airport side of Bamako, so you avoid the traffic in town to reach it. It has been vastly improved over the years and now is perfectly acceptable for any international traveler.

There is a large lobby, with a small bar. Two elevators to the 9 floors. Rooms are spacious and either overlook the pool or the city. They have basic amenities, so soap, shampoo, clean towels and rather firm beds. Television with international channels such as CNN and BBC. There is now even wi-fi throughout the building. Same day laundry service is available.

There are two restaurants, one at lobby level where a buffet breakfast is served. Very much based a French/Continental breakfast plus eggs etc. Strong coffee ! There is also a top floor more upmarket restaurant for lunch or dinner. Service is on the slow side, but the food is good when it does arrive. The maitre d' was very attentive and friendly and has been there for years. The local Capitaine fish is delicious and the best thing to eat in Mali.

The pool is excellent and a welcome relief if you visit during the very hot summer months.
Service throughout the hotel is willing and friendly. The front desk staff all speak good English and money can be exchanged there. There is a small business center and also some shops selling tourist merchandise.

I have stayed there many times and have no hesitation in recommending it.

Room Tip: All rooms are identical. There are rooms on the ground floor which some traveler may prefer as no...

The hotel offers an airport pick-up service which is great. You can change your currencies at the reception and the hotel staff are nice. I felt they were very busy and they take very long to respond when you ask for something (e.g there was no hairdryer in my room and I had to wait 30minutes to get one). But in general, good service and nice and big rooms. The internet connection was good and there is a safe in the room as well for valuables.
The breakfast was quite expensive I found, around 14 euros.
But apart from that, it has a very good lobby for meetings and some live music on Friday evenings.

I have stayed in Azalai Salam three times in February and April 2012. Compared to the other two Azalai hotels in Bamako and the one in Ouagagdougou, this is still the most comfortable and most pleasant.
Rooms are spacious, pool side is a real plus and two bars should fit all tastes. Food menu is a too short and room service average though. The rack room rate is a bit overpriced, better to have a corporate or government's rate.
It is also a very safe hotel and this should not be underestimated with the current political situation in Mali. Some renovation or extension is in progress so check carefully the location of your room.

Room Tip: away from ongoing extension, better to choose upper floors

I stayed 2 years in and out there when there was no other choices in Bamako. The rooms are ok and after a while the crew are friendly.
The pool was fine too.
The down side was there is no business lounge and you get used to the restaurant menu after a week or so.
I would recommended this hotel as it was quite and rooms were ok. This hotel would be my plan b if other option are not available.

Choosing hotels in West Africa is always a difficult task. If you have to be in Bamako then this is just OK and better than a lot of others in the region. Its classed as a 5 star but everything is well worn and seen better days. The property is tidy and clean. The bedrooms are spacious and power and water on all day. Sheets and towels are clean and fresh and not the sorry worn out items you can find at a lot of hotels in the region. There is wifi throughout the hotel at a reasonable speed.
Restuarants are limited and food OK.
Average for most places but better than average for other 5 star properties in the region.
Nice quiet location with outside pool.

Well, staying here every overnight in Bamako. Generally acceptable and just slightly overpriced. Close to airport (less than 10$ for taxi). Good food in restaurant and brekfast is fine (no rotten yougurts or poisnous fish like somebody here wrote), much more better then in Radisson Blue.

Several things that they should change:

- flooring in the room requires change or serious cleaning,
- bath facilities should correspond claimed 5* level (no sewing kit, no slippers and other stuff, just noname soap and gel)
- WiFi connection could be better in the end of the corridor (add routers)
- bedding change should be cheked more attentively. In January I've got dirty pilloow slips over all three pillows. When I asked to replace it (in an hour!) I've got the same crap. The same stroy about towels happens there time after time;
- extreemly long service in restaurant (at least 30-40 min. for waiting in empty place)
- extreemly boring hookers in the bar (don't they have casting?)

Room Tip: Rooms close to elevators are better
