you can hike and climb up the top of the mountain through Vertical World ltd. (www.verticalworldltd.com). It will usually take you a full day and some places you will be roped up. The trail up is nearly at 60 degrees at places with a few bits of easy but exposed rock climbing. You will easily reach the 'shoulder' but the last leg to the head is another story, two 40m scramble will usually keep the faint hearted at bay. The climb up the boulder is done using iron rungs on the first meters and then its an easy rock climb up to the top.

One can drive, with some navigational difficulty (GPS helps), to the bottom of Peiter Both mountain. There is a footpath to the base of the monolith. Well worth the hike, if you want a good view of the surrounding area, including Port Louis and northern side of Mauritius..

Pieter Both is the second highest mountain in Mauritius. It stands 820 metres tall and is named after Pieter Both, the first Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. The most notable feature of this mountain is the gigantic "boulder” situated at the top of it. It can be viewed whilst driving in the vicinity of the mountain from many sides. The accompanying picture was taken from outside a shopping park outside Port Louis.
