The Base is by far one of the cheapest places to stay in Maputo, which is a city seemingly lacking in infrastructure and struggling to keep up with demand for accommodation of foreigners. As such, hotel prices can be sky-high. The Base is one place to stay that wont cost the earth. The backpacker-friendly staff and decent communal facilities make it an acceptable place to stay for a couple of nights. The location is excellent, very close to some good shops and restaurants and also some excellent live music venues where you can meet some locals. I think compared to elsewhere in Maputo The Base is clean, although it is still not fantastic compared with western standards.

In my opinion, it is the best budget accommodation in Maputo. It is in a convenient location, it is cheap, clean and has all the basics (taking into consideration that it is in Africa, and it shouldn't be compared with hostels in other parts of the world). The staff is really friendly there too. I would recommend this place for people who are staying in Maputo, definitely a better option than Fatima's place (where I stayed and didn't have the best experience).

We stay here we do tours of Maputo. The staff are always friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make you feel safe in the city. The hostel could be so much better with a little love and paint. The doubles are basic and if you only want to sleep here then they are fine. The six bed dorms are good. Upstairs area is better than downstairs. As I say you pay for what you get. Not bad for a night. Thanks

With a small infusion of cash and a more visible owner presence, this could be a really amazing backpackers. As it is, it's frustratingly average. The rooms upstairs are okay, especially the double. Avoid the rooms in the basement, nasty things. There is the potential for an amazing terrace with views of Maputo if the owner showing any incentive. The shared computer is also very old so don't bother with Internet. Unfortunately between The Base and Fatima's there's not many other options for backpackers in Maputo. Great business opportunity for someone is just waiting.

Just off one of the main avenues in Maputo, this makes a good base for exploring the city. The staff are very friendly and despite other reviews, the basement dorm is fine. Very slightly must but there are only four beds so it's quite private. The only complaint would be that there's a water pump or something that makes a noise the whole night so take some earplugs. The upstairs double room is a bit quieter. There is a computer in reception to access the internet, although it appears to be from the 1990s so is too slow to really do anything. There is a kitchen with free tea and coffee and a common area with tv too.
