VIP Grand Maputo Hotel
Ranked #18 of 23 Hotels in Maputo

This supposedly five star Hotel is NOT up to scratch. Let’s start at the entrance. Empty water bottles in the flower beds. A Doorman that does not greet you. Breakfast served is cold, no bacon, fried eggs or omelettes are available. The passage smells dusty, there are stains every where on the carpets. The Hotel rooms needs serious attention. The curtains are missing some hooks, the shower is leaking water, the carpets are dirty and not vacuumed regularly. On one occasion I woke up with no water in the taps. None, the whole Hotel ran dry. The channels on the TV is a total disappointment. How are the Stars allocated? To see a five star rating on this Hotel makes me wonder how the rating works, or did the rate themselves to be five star? They should go to the Polana Hotel to see what five star means. I will not recommend this Hotel as value for money and will not recommend it as a comfortable, pleasant place to say.

Room Tip: If you are not a smoker, do not take a room on the 3rd floor.

We were oringally booked into another hotel but due an over booked situation we were moved to the VIP.

The staff were great on arrival, the rooms average size but well appointed.

The TV wasnt tuned into all its channesl but that was fixed fast.
Breakfast is not a huge selcetion but more than adequate.

A well lcoated hotel near where many new office blocks are being builr

I had no hot water on the last day and the toilet was disgustingly dirty. My colleagues had issues with their aircons not working and also didn't have hot water.
Staff are not very helpful in trying to make the stay easier and don't even try organise cheaper taxis.
The hotel definitely needs a revamp soon to stay with the "5 star" rating.

Average hotel which claims to be a 5 Star, average rooms, blankets stank, room service was pathetic, breakfast buffet was terrible. I would recommend anyone who plans to visit here have second thoughts and book another place instead.

I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights because we had a large conference in their facilities.
The hotel is extremely bare and bland, it has no character whatsoever. Formally, it may have all the features of a 5*-Hotel, but everything is of the minimum. Start with the sausages on the breakfast buffet (they look like the cheapest, offputting sausages of all Maputo), the bathrooms need an urgent make-over, the restaurant has the character of a canteen.
I don't mind any of this, if it is a standard hotel, but not a 5*! For a lower price you can go to the great hotels of Maputo (if you look for a good online deal) - this is really bad value for money.
For lunch you only get the full buffet for MZN 860 - very expensive. Across the street in a small restaurant, you get a better meal for 1/3 of this price!
But worst of all, after 2 nights, there was no more hot water. I complained with the reception and they promised to fix it. I trusted them (although there didn't really seem to bother) - what a mistake! The next morning, there was still no hot water. In a 5*-Hotel - for MZN 6800/night! I complained during check-out, asking them for a discount (after all I had paid for a room incl. hot water!). Very reluctantly they wanted to give me a 10% for the second night. Only after insisting I also got it for the first. That was really shameful.
While I was complaining, there were guests next to me at the reception desk, doing the same. They gave them a suit for ironing, and it had disappeared for 48 hours!
So: go and find something else!

The Hotel is clean and has all the basic necessities, although there is only wi-fi in the reception area. The Bathrooms are tired and need to be revamped and breakfast is basic... to say the least.
I would recommend it for the businessman who is looking for a no frills place to spend his time in Maputo, although not that cheap.

The VIP claims to be five star, but it is more like a two or three star hotel with five star prices. The only reason I stayed there is the proximity to my client’s office, but in the future I will be staying at the Cardoso, which is on a totally different level of quality.

The hotel is fairly nondescript, with dated décor and furnishings. Rooms are fairly standard in layout, and one good thing to say about the place at least is that it is kept clean.

Now for the bad:
1) The breakfast is just awful; stone cold greasy chips, radioactive looking sausages, perhaps a bit of leftover fish or chicken from the conference buffet of the day before, some congealed egg and tinned mushrooms. More or less the same every day. Away from the hot food are various rock hard pastries, and a selection of unripe or tinned fruits (unforgiveable in a tropical country).

2) Other than the good maid service, the staffing is very poor – awful front desk staff in particular.

3) As mentioned, it’s just all a bit dated and tired, and musty.

4) This is the killer for me – the internet is just staggeringly bad. Unless you go online at 3 in the morning (as I did last night) it’s more or less unusable. Minutes just to open google or gmail, skype more or less impossible, emails difficult to send etc. I complained to the manager, and he said that it works fine in his apartment (lucky old sod!). He also claims that he is paying for the best service available, though his network consultant disagreed with him and told me that he has been telling the hotel to upgrade for a long time. There was of course the usual suggestion that my machine is at fault, but it’s clearly not as the internet is lightning fast in our office here on the same machine, plus my colleagues have the same problem. Of course, the manager also said that I am the first to complain but that is about as likely as me attending a Justin Bieber concert. He is clearly lying through his teeth, unless it was his first day as Manager. Regardless of what the manager says, the internet is shocking, and has always been shocking. I don’t imagine that they will do anything to improve it in the near future.

5) Price – although the client pays our bills, 200 bucks plus a night for this kind of place is a rip off.

I have stayed here numerous times for the reason described above, but am now just sick of its shortcomings – never again, despite it's useful location. I think it must have been one of the first “international” hotels in Maputo, but it clearly hasn’t moved the game on since it was opened, and there are far better options now available (Cardoso, Radisson blu, Southern sun etc).

My advice to you is not to stay at this hotel.

Room Tip: in another hotel
