Just outside the coastal town of Swakopmund, on the road to Walvis Bay, I found some of the highest dunes I have ever seen. In fact, reading up about it later, they are amongst the highest on earth. With the Atlantic Ocean waves crashing on the beach on one side of the road, and imposing dunes on the other I stopped my car with the intention to climb up a dune to take some video footage. This was easier said than done. Not only are the dunes extremely steep and high, but for every 3 steps forward I slipped back one step. Once on the crest of the dune, and once I recovered from exhaustion, I enjoyed some of the most breathtaking scenery I have ever seen. Behind me the purest and most desolate desert I have ever had the pleasure of seeing, and in front of me the pounding waves of the Ocean. The contrasting temperatures of desert and ocean created a slight mist, making the scene quite scary. A moment I will remember forever, and a place recommended for the discerning traveller.
