Gathemann on Independence Avenue in the heart of Windhoek is clearly one the outstanding restaurants in Namibia's capital. Urs Gamma, the Swiss owner, makes every guest instantly welcome and the young, friendly wait staff make this a unique dining experience. The food is impeccable and the wine list well assorted. Gathemann should be on everyone's "to do list" when in Windhoek.

As a regular patron for over twenty years, I have never had a bad experience. Gathemann is the closest you will get to a fine dining experience in Windhoek, the menu is interesting and the daily "specials" are enough to provoke thr most jaded palate. The presentation of the food is perfect and the taste is always superb. Mr. Gamma will always go out of his way to serve something special if you request a change to the menu. His set Christmas Eve Dinner is an institution and something very special. The wine list is provocative. All this and and a wonderful atmosphere. One last thing! - the service is professional and pleasant.

Besides the relaxing and clean ambience and good smell upon entering the restaurant, we are always greeted with a smile coming form the kitchen (which is open and I just love peeping into the kitchens to see the vibe, the working together) and what they are creating! The Chef's choice is to be recommended, the owner, URS GAMMA and chef "plays" with local products, also using local products form small organic farmers! Way to GO!!!!

The wine selection is really great, Gathemann again supports the smaller winemakers, bringing interesting and fascinating bouquets to our noses and palettes! MMMMM, anytime is a good time for a meal at GATHEMANN's!

If you are staying in the Windhoek City Centre this is a great choice for dinner - walking distance from the Kalahari Sands and Hilton Hotels, this restaurant offers quality food and great ambience.
Housed in a beautifully restored and decorated old building, the menu is varied but not so extensive that it takes hours to read.

Our waitron was professional and knowledgeable and persuaded us to try the specials by describing them in detail and even showing us the amazing fresh mushrooms available that evening.

Portions are generous but not overpowering and the dessert trio of home made ice creams was a sublime end to a delicious meal.

Prices are high for Windhoek and the special wines list made me blanch a bit, but more rsonably priced wines are also available.

Billing themselves as a "Traditional Food" restaurant is a bit misleading - while some German dishes are available, the menu is cosmopolitan and modern and plating is sophisticated.

Another drawback is that there is no parking - take a taxi if you can't walk.

All in all, a lovely evening sitting on the balcony, watching swallows wheel against the sky as the city quietened down for the weekend.
