Owner description: Windhoek, Namibia’s capital city, is described as a city with a ‘continental’ atmosphere and this can be ascribed to its architecture – historical buildings dating back to German colonial rule. Windhoek was initially known as Ai-gams a Nama word meaning ‘firewater’, ‘steam’ or ‘smoke’ because of the area’s plentiful hot springs.

Typical casino with an even more depressing atmosphere.

Some renovation is currently underway and should, hopefully, bring the hotel back to its former glory. The Casino is plain dirty and poorly managed

We were a group of friends that wanted to play some Black Jack after dinner. At the casino entrance we clearly stated that that is the only game we want to play (so we don't need slot machine cards). We had to pay N$10 entrance fee. As we entered the casino we saw that the Black Jack table was closed for renovations and we were not interested in the smoking area (pregnant lady in our group), so we immediately went back to reception, kindly stated that we see the table is closed and that we would rather leave and have our entrance fee refunded. Both the receptionist and manager on duty shrugged their shoulders and told us that it was "too bad", they cannot refund our entrance fee, even though we clearly stated that we wanted to play Black Jack and nobody told us that the BJ table is closed for renovations. When I asked the manager if he thought this treatment is fair, he bluntly said "No", but still made no effort to accomodate us as clients. I will never go back there again!

I got in at 8 am and they got me right into a room. Which was great. The room was very nice. The staff (housekeeping, linen, front desk) were very helpful. The restaurant was a LITTLE pricey. It's buffet with a nice selection but I would have loved a menu. The bar was closed for remodeling while I was there.

You need to remember that this is Africa and despite how nice Namibia is, there are things you need to be cautious about. The neighborhood at night is just a LITTLE sketchy. Use the safe during the day. The casino was odd. Full of hookers and groups of older women who just seem to take up seats at the slots and talk. I got screamed at by a man who had stuck his "players card" in a slot and walked away for an hour.

I didn't know this. I just saw a slot that had been open for a long time, went over, there was a card in it, I popped it out and was soon confronted by this crazy man AND the casino staff who were yelling at me. Apparently you can lock down a slot and go to Tahiti for a weekend.

The last night I was there the elevator, internet, TV and phones went out. 14 hours later I asked the woman at the front desk if there was ANY chance the net would be up soon. She picked up the phone, talked to someone, hung up, smiled and said "No".
