Review of Karibu Safari

Karibu Safari
Reviewed 28 July 2014

We returned from this fabulous trip a couple of weeks ago. It was with some trepidation that we faced the prospect of a largely camping trip but we needn't have worried - it was a fantastic experience! We certainly had the advantages of being in a very small group (just 2 couples) and therefore having so much individual attention, so perhaps if it had been a 'full house' it wouldn't have been quite as good. What made it so memorable were our wonderful guide and driver, Charles, and assistant, George, also a great guy. We were looked after so well, nothing was ever too much trouble. Charles was a great and very safe driver, and was so patient with everyone. Even 3 punctures in one day were 'all in a day's work' (a long day!). He was an absolute mine of information on everything - history, culture, geology, plants, animals and birds and we all learnt such a lot. George was a wonderful cook and we had some really great meals. A 'dream team'! Thank you to them and to Karibu for a great holiday. There was such a variety, from the scenery, especially the dunes, the National Parks of Etosha and Chobe and finally the spectacular Victoria Falls - it was noted that in a TV programme last week, about the seven wonders of the Commonwealth, the Sussusvlei dunes (and Deadvlei, also the Himba) were named, as well as Victoria Falls. We could say with pride 'just been there'! Jean and Ernie

My wife and I traveled with Karibu on their Essence of Namibia tour in August 2011. We were really lucky in that there was a total of 12 on the tour but 8 were non-English speaking and needed an interpreter. This meant that Karibu thoughtfully split us into 2 vehicles, giving us much more space and viewing opportunities for all of us. We met up at lunch and camp each day, which still allowed us to interact with all the guests and other guides.

Our guides were excellent - focused on service, great at spotting game and highly knowledgeable about anything we asked. Nothing was ever a problem and the always aimed to please. In fact, they were much better than the guides we had in Botswana.

Camps were basic and food was "rustic" camp cooked meals and this suited us just fine. We never went hungry and had no cause to complain about meals - it was just like eating at home.

Game viewing in Etosha was awesome and a must do. The guides went out of their way to find game and get us as close as possible, which is a challenge given Etosha's no off-road policy.

The scenery across Namibia is amazing and in some ways outshines the game viewing of Etosha. You still see springbok, gemsbok, ostrich and the occasional elephant but to be honest, the desert plateaus and dunes of Sossusvlei will more than make up for the lack of game outside of the parks.

The only criticism is that if there were 12 in a vehicle, it could become crowded for game viewing, however for the price of the safari, it's just something you have to accept, or pay more for a smaller group safari.

Overall, we had a great time with Karibu and I would highly recommend them as providing great value for money. If the flights from Australia to J'burg weren't so expensive and long, we would be back there in a heartbeat.

We had a group of 8 around the same age and our guide was Lawrence, The poor guy put up with a lot, but we had great fun, Great lodges, the truck broke down and we stayed in a great lodge Mushara and after that Mushara Bush Camp. We had 12 days and 4 days in tented accommodation which was fantastic in the middle of nowhere. Thank you Lawrence and staff and also thank you to the group for making this trip absolutely fantastic, Good Food, great game viewing and lodges and a great experience, loved Namibia with its kind people , great food and good service. All up it was a 12 day safari, lodges and tented accommodation from Windhoek to Windhoek, well worth it

It doesnt appear karibu have a listing for their Botswana branch, so ill post my review here.

Four of us went on an authentic mobile safari with Karibu through Botswana and it was truely amazing.

Our guide Lenty, had exceptional knowledge of the areas and its wildlife and definately added to the exceptional experience. Would highly reccomend Karibu over self driving or other safaris as there is so much more to gain from the experience of the guides that would otherwise be missed.

Although camping in tents, a high level of luxury is offered that other mobile safaris do not offer, including portable toilets instead of holes in the grounds, warm bucket showers (even if the evenings are somewhat cool), and extremely comfortable bedding.
Our chef was amazing and prepared the most tasty, flavoursome meals well above the expectations of what you could imagine from being cooked on a camp fire.

Fresh bread was made and baked daily and tasted amazing.

All the support staff were excellent and did an amazing job setting up and pulling down our camp in the extreme heat. The camps were always set up and ready before we arrived.

Would highly reccomend Karibu to any one considering Safaris in Africa, and highly reccomend Botswana due to its high number of wildlife. Definitely increases your chances of seeing the animals.

Just back from a safari with Karibu Safari I went on their 16 day Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe trip the majority of the trip is in Namibia. Namibia is a fascinating country with spectacular scenery and wildlife. The orange sand dunes around Sossusvlie at sunrise and sunset are surreal with their sharp outline and constantly changing colors – great for photographing. I really liked the mix of scenery and wildlife that this trip presented – 2 weeks of wildlife would be a bit much for me.
This was my first camping type holiday and I really enjoyed it – a fantastic way to experience a safari especially the sounds you hear at night and the early morning starts.
I was very impressed with the Karibu staff our guide Dilphin and his assistant Justice they were professional friendly and knowledgeable on all aspects of wildlife, regions and people.
The trip finished up at Victoria Falls the scenery around the falls was fantastic but the town was disappointing overpriced for the standard and a lot of hassle from street vendors. I had booked a few extra days here when one would have been enough. Did the white water rafting it was very enjoyable.
I booked the trip through a London based operator 'Wild about Africa' I found them very knowledgeable and helpful, they sent me a very detailed literary, maps and some great advice in their pack.
