“A really not nice experience”
Reviewed 15 August 2014

Located centrally, this hotel offers a nice setting and nice views on the city.
Although the outside building looks a bit like a little “manor”, one should not expect much luxury or cosy feeling inside.

The room we got (located on the ground floor near the reception area) was decorated very simply with old and rather cheap looking furniture. The small windows make it relatively dark and it was very cold (especially the bathroom which does not have any heating). Yet, the bed was comfortable so it is functional room but if you look for a romantic setting with a cosy atmosphere, go somewhere else!

Some rooms face the garden/pool and some face the street. Street facing (where we stayed) can get a bit noisy at times with cars and we got woken up a few times by a group of errand barking dogs.

We only had breakfast there and the food was quite good.

Overall the staff is helpful and relatively friendly.
Amazingly enough though, people at reception are rude and quite unfriendly. Check-in time was like a cold shower: no smiling faces or welcoming words. Both ladies looked totally bored and uninvolved. The one that took us to our room did not say a word to us. We asked for internet password and had to chase her 3 times to get it. Check out was no better.

To our surprise, we got a phone call the following morning from reception telling us “it’s 11 o’clock, check out”. No: “good morning, how are you?” or “are you ready to check out, can we help you with your luggage?”. Nothing.

We have travelled a lot in many different countries and never experienced such thing before. We shared it with the management who apologised reluctantly. I guess a real service-oriented manager would have said “how can we make the rest of your stay more comfortable?” or something similar. But nothing like that happened and they even made us pay the coffee we had while we were waiting to be picked up…

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing the street and on the ground floor. If possible, get a room facing the garden/poo...

Originally I tried to book into a boutique hotel in Windhoek but after a long series of flights we really appreciated arriving at this comfortable, competent hotel. It probably isn't the equivalent of other Relais&Chateaux outside of Namibia but neither is it too stuffy too cope with two teenagers, worn out after 24 hours travelling. We found the hotel and restuarant relaxed and charming. service was excellent. Schalk, the receptionist was especially competent.

note: Windhoek is not really worth a visit in itself - this really is just a stopover on the way to somewhere more exciting in Namibia

Room Tip: The rooms are located around a courtyard, ground level and first floor, all much the same size

This was our upteenth trip to Africa...but our first to Namibia. Our first night stay was at Hotel Heinitzburg....and the accomodations were exceptional. Count von Schweriin commissioned the castle for his fiance Margareth in 2014. As the legend says...love was his inspiration and elegance his achievement. And it still holds today. Gracious host...and dining supreme...with an VERY exceptional wine cellar. Would definitely recommend this...and would stay here again if we were to trasverse to Namibia once more....which we will.

Room Tip: If available, the first room across the small courtyard from the reception desk is first class!!

After a long trip from the UK via Johannesburg, by the time we reached Windhoek we were weary but the warmth of our reception including a glass of fizz brought to our room which we took to the sundowner terrace dragged us back to life. Perched high up above the Namibian capital with great views, the outdoor terrace provided a special moment at the start of our three-week trip. The room was high quality with lots of lovely little touches. The bed was comfortable and the shower both hot and reviving. We ate in the hotel restaurant - it was quaintly old fashioned but of the highest quality in terms of both food and service. We ate oryx, springbok and kudu - matched with a lovely wine from the amazing cellar. The Heinitzburg puts service and attention to detail at the top of its priority list and we would have no hesitation in staying there again on our next visit to Windhoek.

Visits 5 and 6 to this hotel confirmed my earlier reviews: Good location, perfect terrasse for a sundowner and an ok restaurant, but very cold rooms in wintertime! Room 14 could not be heated with the airconditioner, room 13 which I got for the second night could be heated with the aircon. But the bathroom stayed cold! The restaurant is still good but wants to be more than what it actually is. Good for Namibian standards but not more. Impressive winelist and a nice open fire to warm you up before you retire to your cold room! The hotel does not offer airport transfers but orders taxis and, according to a taxi driver, charges a commission. On my return trip to the airport, they offered me to share the taxi with another guest but did not tell my that for two people, the taxi costs ND 450 instead of ND 280 for one passenger. Strange practice anyway to charge per person and not per trip! Staff is friendly and for namibian standards quite responsive and well trained.

We stayed at the beginning and at the end of our self-driving tour at the Heinitzburg.
This beautiful hotel combines the historical building of 1914 with elegant furniture and modern comfort. We stayed in two different rooms and each of it was cosy, with comfortable beds and a spacious shower. Before you go to bed one of the “angels” remake your room.
The hotel is centrally located. Coming from the international airport it is very easy to reach (45 km). The city centre of Windhoek is in walking distance and at day time you can walk to the Christ church, Independence Museum and the parliament.
But the best place of the site is the terrace with it´s fantastic view over Windhoek. So at each time of the day, either for breakfast, for lunch or for the sundowner, this is the place to be.
Breakfast is served in the tower and on the terrace. Take your time to enjoy the rich and very delicious breakfast. Especially, the different homemade jams like tomato basil jam or strawberry –white chocolate are worth to be tasted.
The swimming pool area is also a place of relaxation and you can watch birds and lizards.
The staff and owner of the hotel are very friendly and helpful.

We booked into the Heinitzburg for two nights at the start of our holiday. After a long flight it was the ideal place to relax. The setting is beautiful - especially the views over Windhoek. The hotel has all the amenities you would expect from a hotel of its class. We ate both nights in the restaurant and we were very happy with the meal on both occasions. We chose game - springbox and oryx - both excellent. The chef came round to talk to the clients and he really wanted to find out how you were enjoying the experience - not just a superifical chat. In fact the staff were very professional as you would expect and also very friendly and concerned that you had a good experience at the hotel. They all went the extra mile. We liked being able to visit Windhoek in the day - it's hardly any distance - but be able to stay somewhere beautiful and quiet away from the noise and bustle. The pool and the courtyard garden are very restful.

Room Tip: Only one room, we believe, has a view over the town. So if this is important to you be sure to ask...
