“Business layover”
Reviewed 8 October 2012

The staff were very curteous and helpful.
However the rooms overlooking Independence Avenue were both noisy from trafic pollution and very warm even with the airconditioning on all night.
The food was average and I would recommend seeking advice to eat outwith of the hotel
Joe's Beerhouse restaurant has a kind of legendary status attached to it and is well worthy of consideration

Room Tip: Ask to be accommodated away from Independence avenue and hope that the air con works

I didn't want to rate this hotel as poor because the staff were very friendly and the restaurant/bar is quite good and fun. The bartender was very nice and made us feel welcome.

However, the rooms were quite shabby and the neighborhood did not feel safe at night. We got up at 5am just to get away.

I thought that because it was close to the training venue where I had to attend training that it would be most suitable. It needs a serious serious renovation, The staff need to get more trainng on custommer service. The "Restaurant " was pathetic , cold breakfast and not enough food to cater for a large group. Where do you get a REstaurant that runs out of stock on english tea. The Bathrooms only had how water. The bedding gave me a restless night. Not ever staying there again.

Room Tip: I would not take a room facing teh main street . Its very noisey

We arrived pretty late at this hotel, and as we were leaving early we had picked a 3 star value for money hotel rather than pay the rates for a 5 star hotel. After getting lost I called reception and i had the most helpful lady on the line who directed us in, its centrally located, and is close to restuarants shops and bars. If people expect to pay 3 star rates and receive 5 star rooms and service then they will be let down. Go there with the 3 star in your head and you'll have a great stay. Lift wasnt working. we were on the 2nd floor, it didnt bother me.
Rooms are not modern, but they are clean and neat with a double bed, tea and coffee facilities and a flat screen TV, with clean and functional bathrooms. There is a pub downstairs which offers the sport on a big screen, and its a fabourite with the locals.
All in all, i really cannot complain about this hotel at all.
NOTE: It has been taken over and is now managed by the Protea Hotel group, so things may improve even further.

It's not the worst hotel in the world, but it's got quite a few things that really get under your skin. Overall the rooms are clean, the staff are very helpful and friendly and it's in a central part of town, but there are too many negatives. The biggest one is that the lift does not work. And has not worked for about a year now I guess, as I and colleagues have stayed there often. It's really a pain when you have heavy bags. There are 44 stairs to the second floor. The wifi is expensive - only one free code per room and if you use the allowance, then you have to buy more and there's a price plan. The hotel is noisy at night. There are always cars tearing up and down Independence Avenue (even though its opposite the police station) and you will be woken by shouting/commotion/fights outside the hotel in the early hours of the mornings. Then there's the restaurant. They have cleaned up their breakfast act a bit - it used to be filthy, but the food is quite limited. There was a decent Ethiopian restaurant in the hotel but this has been closed and now they have a burger & chips menu with a poor greek salad the only option for veggies. I've stayed there 4 or 5 times -mainly due to location. That's enough now, its not even last resort.

Room Tip: Don't stay there

I currently stayed at this hotel for business and since my organization has a limited budget we chose this hotel for its price and amazing location.

First off, the location is incredible! Right in the middle of town and close to everything - bars, restaurants, shops, government buildings, etc. There is also a Tre grocery store just a 5 minute walk down the street that has everything you need to buy.

Secondly, my room was was very modern, clean, great queen bed and flat screen TV with international news channels and a great movie channel - and very quiet.

And lastly, the staff were very helpful with fixing my safe in the room and recommending places to eat.

Ultimately I was very happy to see that most of the comments on here were nothing like what I experienced. And no, I am not part of the hotel staff (just look at all of my other reviews). I'm just a frequent business/personal traveler who likes to review hotels - good and bad.

The hotel belongs to the Protea group, so a clean room, with clean linen, an otherwise generally acceptable room. Although, nothing to rave about at all. The hotel is located in a centre of the city, with no night life but the hustle and bustle of the city in the daytime. This hotel was fine for an overnight business stay, although I would not like to have spent anymore time there.
