This is a pretty nice hotel. Not on the same level as Hiltons elsewhere in the world maybe but a lot better than other hotels in Abuja.

The food is good epecially as there's a good choice of restaurants and bars. The pool bar is lovely at night but don't go if you're hungry and want to eat quickly, the service is incredibly slow, but the staff are friendly.

Internet access is very expensive here and cashing a travellers cheque can take forever! (I was advised not to use a credit card in Nigeria so I took cheques, may need to rethink that if I go again)

Overall a good hotel, with a great buzz about it in the evenings.

It is two years I live in Nigeria and since the NICON is the center of activities in Town I know it quite well.
If you are looking for an upmarket place were to stay I don't believe that the NICON give you a good "quality/price" value.
Anyhow if you just want to stay in your room and use the hotel facilities (all but the bars and the disco, where you will be overwhelmed by the "courtesy" of "bar girls") there is no alternative among the 5 stars hotel category in Abuja.

However unless you don't stay in the super delux room or suite for a much lower price you can find alterantive at the Rockview Hotel at the Sheraton, at Le Meridiane and at the Mediterranean Hotel

Now called the Transcorp Hilton, this is apparently the largest hotel in West Africa - I think the 'Transcorp' aspect goes to explain why there is a car showroom on site. Frankly, it's not a great hotel. As far as I can tell, I had a watch stolen from the room although I'm not sure that's where it went missing, so I haven't taken the complaint further. I would advise strongly, however, that anything small, portable and with any kind of value is placed firmly in the safe alongside passports, cash etc. Even in your own room in a Hilton, it seems, you're not insulated from crime. A couple of the other people I was traveling with anecdotally reported thefts of wash bags, and small amounts of currency.

The front desk was very slow, both checking in and out, so be ready for delays if you're arriving or leaving at busy times. The rooms themselves are relatively well equipped. Mine was decorated with horrible blue plastic, but it was fairly clean and had a decent bathroom. There was a dry cleaning shop in the hotel, but no collection from the rooms. There was an iron and ironing board in the room, but no robe, slippers, etc. A strange mix of services. And the bathroom provisions were pretty sparse! The TV had the usual blend of western and local channels, plus a couple of excellent movie channels showing some recent and classic movies. Given the risks of travelling unaccompanied in Nigeria, in-house entertainment is important!

The swimming pool is a great facility, although there were no lifeguards as far as I could tell. Nextdoor, the pool bar was a fun place to hang out, and was made all the better by the absence of prostitutes. These ladies are everywhere in the hotel's bars. They're fairly harmless, but can be quite persistent in offering their services.

Overall, a good option in Abuja, but a pretty poor Hilton when compared with the rest of the world. Just remember to secure your possessions.

  • Liked — It's the best option for business travelers in Abuja
  • Disliked — Possible theft from my room, the decor, the large number of prostitutes in the public areas, the slow front desk.
  • Tips/Secrets — Use the in-room safe!

I stayed at the Nicon Hilton with my husband, mom, and three children who were ages 6 months, 2, and 7 at the time. We stayed in the three bedroom presidental suite. It was ok but the dekor was a bit dated. We are use to staying in the Ritz Carltons, and FOur Seasons around the world but this was the best that Abuja has to offer. Ther kids loved the outdoor pool and the playground. I liked the outside huts for shopping. I got some great deals there but you really have to bargin with the people because they will try to cheat tourists. Overall we had a nice time visiting Nigeria. It was different than the US but is was a very interesting experince.

I stayed in the Hilton for a week in September 2006 when in Abuja for a major international conference (now known as Transcorp Hilton and not Nicon Hilton it seems). Some delegates were in Le Meridien and from what we heard the Hilton was better. The rooms are much like any Hilton hotel in any part of the world and I had no complaints - everything seemed to work OK and there was always plenty of hot water. On some floors the rooms seemed to be decorated with green bright plastic although on my floor they had wood panelling which was preferable. If you want to eat here eat by the pool where European style snack food (burger + chips etc) is served until late or in Zuma restaurant where the food was quite good. Some people liked the oriental restaurant but that wasn't my style. The food served in the main conference events was pretty dire I have to say. The service is generally slow but I think that may be a national trait and not just a hotel-specific thing. As another review mentions the hotel is FULL of prostitutes at night which does raise an issue about security and access in general - one delegate had his mobile phone pickpocketed during our stay but in general it seemed reasonably secure. The prostitutes will leave you alone if you don't encourage them! There is one bar with late night music and dancing which I didn't go to but which is apparently the main place they hang out.

If you have to go to Abuja you could do worse than staying here.

just returned from the nicon excellent hotel..service great although had problems cashing our travellers cheques but sorted it in the end! stayed in a hilton king room spacious room contempary in style modern with earthy colours it had an iron & board along with a/c and a minibar all you would expect from a modern hotel. Our room over looked the fabulous pool area.. they have two pools one for children they also have a poolside bar where we ordered some light snacks and yes the food is poor! if you are after african food dont eat at this bar! they have tennis courts, squash courts and a casino and a couple of bars plus a nightclub. In all this hotel is very stylish and comfortable and is definately the best in Abuja the Sheraton is a hostel compared to this one!

I just spend a bit more than 2 weeks in this hotel, and I may believe it is the nicest in town and perhaps the country. But don't hold your breath - there is some honest attempt to create a luxury atmosphere, what with the shiny metal and wood surfaces, but mostly the service is negligent. Despite the fact that the hotel has more restaurants and bars than I can count, the food is overpriced and really bad throughout. Bring lots of candy bars. On the positive side, the hotel seems safe (despite the prostitutes) and most employees are friendly, if inefficient. There may not be a better alternative in town, but that does not make the NICON Hilton a great place to stay.
