“Rough Neighbourhood - Decent Hotel - Modest Pricing”
Reviewed 20 September 2013

To begin with, you might skip a heartbeat or get pangs of buyer's remorse as you drive into the street that takes you to this place. Not the classiest neighborhood I would say, but Lome being what it is, most of the city looks a little worn out.

The Hotel is a decent Inn category property that can boast of a seemingly clean swimming pool, a functional bar-restaurant and stable wi-fi internet. Its a shame the Pizzeria only opens occasionally since it served some decent pizzas.

The service and restaurant although decent, are pretty french - which is a common problem in this region. French service - little portions, uninspiring food that is served with 2 sentences of description. ( Your boiled potato is - Le special pomme de terre for my special monsieur, cooked avec special tenderness in an earthen pot submerged in juices of earth at a tender flame to enrich the flavor).

What I didn't like was the lighting in the room - a single small yellow bulb glowing halfheartedly in the room was really insufficient and I spent my days squinting and using a flash torch.

The view of the lagoon outside can be a nice thing to wake up to and Lome being a small town, you are about 15 minutes to the city center and about 5 minutes to the Hotel.

Just like the previous reviewer, I got stranded with no pick up at the airport but the lady at the reception was apologetic and promptly paid for the taxi upon my arrival. That was some good proactive customer service !

One thing you need to be beware of - if you aren't some snooty well heeled business traveler who gets an official car - getting a taxi out of the area can be challenging. However, getting Moto taxis is relatively easier.

I would not mind coming back, but definetely in a room with more light ! I heard the rooms on the first floor were bigger, costlier and better equipped.

Room Tip: No Wi-Fi in the single rooms on the ground floor across the pool, you will need to sit at the recept...

They promise to meet at the airport. We were left stranded after the last flight of the night. Information desk at airport was helpful.

Staff will screw you. This is located in an extremely poor area with NO additional facilities close by. Staff wanted to change money at a 20 percent rate in their favor. You are really stuck as there are no banks or stores in the area. OK if you speak French, but English is an extreme challenge (and we have been all over the world).

Room Tip: Book somewhere else.

I spent two weeks and I enjoyed it. Good value for money and friendly and helpful staff. Food is quite good, view over the Laguna is nice, the atmosphere could be noisy but also nice and relaxing

Recommended.

The rooms are a bit on the dingy side and don't get lit up much by the lights but this is a good value place near the airport and a cab ride from the centre of town. There are parties just outside the hotel grounds on the edge of the lake that can be somewhat loud. I never did manage to get the tv remote control to work, and the reception staff failed too - but a minor irritant. Pretty good small restuarant and bar too - not bad for Lome.

This Hotel is great, very nice and big clean rooms. Service in the restaurant is sometimes a bit slow but still very friendly personnel.
The pool area is great. We enjoyed our stay very much. The Hotel has a nice restaurant as well which serves European and African food which is tasty and excellent.

The room was fine, shower and aircon working OK. We spent our first and last nights in Togo here, as it in only a short drive from the airport. Don't be put off by the approach road, which is a rubbish strewn dirt track; once inside the hotel, there is a relaxing area with swimming pool and small bar/restaurant. We had a decent fish dinner. Staff were pleasant and polite.

Room Tip: Avoid the room next to the car park.

I spent 2 months at the Hotel Napoléon Lagune and found it very hard to leave. The location is lovely, a wonderful place to really feel like you are getting away from all the hustle and bustle of Lomé, the pool area is so relaxing, it feels like a garden. It's so handy for the airport and to get into the center of Lomé that you can really get everywhere within half an hour - even with bad traffic. The view of the Lagune is really lovely and you can enjoy the lagune-side bar next to the hotel for a great place to have relaxing sundowner drinks and mingle with locals, there is loud music from this bar but I defy you to find anywhere in Lomé that is quiet!

The hotel bar & restaurant area is also relaxing, lovely and shady which takes the edge of the heat too, and the food is Excellent! There's a wide variety of choice on the menu from Western to African cuisine and during my 2 months I tried everything from breakfast to dinner! I was not disappointed once. You can also receive WIFI at the bar and reception areas, although if many people are using it it can be quite slow - but it is Africa!

Not only is the food excellent but so is the service, all the staff were very friendly, polite and open-hearted, from the reception staff, the restaurant and bar staff, the cleaners and the gardeners. I always felt welcome by them, and as I was a woman travelling on my own that makes a very big difference. My privacy was always respected, especially in terms of room cleaning (which was very different from any other hotel I've stayed in in Africa). The hotel was also very safe and secure which is peace of mind when travelling on your own in this region, nothing ever went missing - including cash left out in the room.

A special mention needs to be made about the Managers Lionel and Liselle - they were exceptionally welcoming. They always took the time to get to know each guest a little and to socialise a little with us in the evenings. They were so helpful in assisting me with issues that I had while in Togo that I think my journey would have been a lot harder without them.

I would very much recommend this hotel for anyone staying in Lomé - especially if you are staying for more than a few days, it really felt like home with all the benefits of a great hotel. I have been travelling for work for more than 10 years and Hotel Napoléon Lagune is in my top 3 hotels! (The other two are 5 star!).

Thank you for everything! I will be back!!!
