We stayed in better places in Kampala. Our double room was decent - the bathroom had little free toothpastes. Food and service was ok, we felt as though we were waiting forever, probably the slowest in the 3 months we were travelling. Found the other clientelle to be pretty unfriendly, but not sure if the layout fostered this or if it was just the bunch that were there at the time, but overall not really much crack to be had. Also the free internet just crawled and none of the computers were working... just error screens.

Well!
Here they bite, and it took days to stop hitching.
We choose the place according to their Web Site, and partly lonely planet recommandation and because they were offering tour to Merchinson falls. But the maintenance hasn't been done for long.
For 45,000 Shillings we had bathroom outside (passing through the mud and in pitch dark at night) on a basic service: cold water, non functionning toilet....etc.
The bed in the room was bending back way with bed bugs included; the floor cover was all ript, the chairs cover of cat hairs, the smell of moister included. The food was pricy for what you get. The only good recommandation will be for the girls at the reception, only.
The next day we move to another hotel about 250 meter toward Kampala city and for the same price we had CLEAN room, comfortable mattress, satellite TV, bathroom with hot shower, breakfast included, the service of massage and sona for a litttle price, and smilling service
Seeing the kind of place we could not trust taking their tour at 320US$ for fear that it would be also a bad experience

sure it's not the cleanest or the quietest, but it's a HOSTEL people! i really loved this place and it be came my home away from home while travelling in e. africa for a month. it's a bit outside the city - a 10 min. boda ride, but i liked that as it's quieter and feels like a haven. everyone is extremely friendly - as a lone traveller this is where i made the most friends by far. the common area is homey and comfortable, the food is good, the wireless works, it's safe, and it's dirt cheap! also there's an amazing pool a quick walk away, go relax there if you have time! i wish i'd found it sooner. back home in brooklyn and still missing backpacker's...

Extremely disappointed with our stay here after the write up it got in the Lonely Planet.

To start with the place is located a good 20mins out of town (Traffic in Kampala is shocking) even though central Kampala is quite safe. Our confirmed reservation was lost and I was told the only option was to pay for an upgraded room.

When we were shown the room we were greeted with about 30 bull ants crawling around the room. Reluctantly we were given another one. Staff were more interested in talking on their mobile phones than assisting guests. Breakfast of eggs/toast and a cup of tea took 45mins to arrive. Other guests commented that lunch/dinner normally took 1-1.5 hrs to arrive. The wireless was down while we were there. The trave desk which was a major reason we went there in the first place was NON EXISTANT.

Planned on staying for a week but left after 12 hrs. It looks like it once was a nice place but it was in complete neglect and disrepair. The only positive was the well stocked bar.

If you're coming to Kampala check out the Aponye Hotel.

We'd read good things in the guidebooks, and enjoyed the photos on their websites sufficiently to book one of their self-contained rooms for our last night in Uganda (we had an early morning start to the airport and it was on the right side of town). We've stayed in a lot of hostels in Africa and elsewhere, and we weren't expecting anything fancy -- just the the qualities that are easy to get right: cleanliness, function, decent service. Instead, they'd lost our reservation and the room we'd been promised was full. They put us in another room -- the Queen Elizabeth -- that was also self-contained, but it wasn't anything like the photo on the website and was filthy (shower had been used complete with dirty towel, toilet unflushed and broken, etc). We asked to be moved and they put us in an un-self-contained room that was grim but serviceable, save that the shower near to it was ice-cold, the mozzie net was more holes than net, and the courtyard it overlooked was noisy until about 2am (we had a 5.30 start). It did have a nice bar area, which we lingered in because our room was so depressing. Overall, very disappointing: best thing about it was the taxi away from it the next morning.

A nice place to camp with friendly staff including the manager, John Hunwick, who is very helpful in making your stay in Uganda as enjoyable as possible. Bagpackers has a nice bar area with comfy seats and tasty food at low prices, aswell as the opportunity to log on to the internet till late hours. The eco toilets are not so attractive to say the least but there are other toilets and hot showers that are available most of the time. Monkeys roaming around the campsite makes the place all the worthwhile and the security at this place is very good.
