We visit africa 2-4 times a year. once atleast in Uganda among the countries we visit. As soon as you walk in to this guest house, everyone makes you feel special. Alex's little touches has made the guest house super. The front desk staff remembers you and could not be nicer. They really care about your day. The chef knows who you are and knows what your favorite food is and gets it for you. He is so nice to my kids always. He know their names and where they go to school.
Olivia is another hero for this place. She makes you feel at home. This what makes this guest house my home year in year out.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the behind garden are my best bet

Good food, hospitable folks and above all very clean. I will recommend them to my friends who intend to visit Uganda in June 2014.It is a secluded hotel and very quiet.

I asked for the local food dishes which they happily provided. I ate a tasteless plantain which I was told it was "the matooke".

Room Tip: The suit detached from the main building is fabulous!

Alex makes a great omelet for breakfast, the rooms are clean and the walled garden is in huge pleasant contrast to the surrounding area. A house made into several en-suite rooms makes for unusual room layouts but comfortable and affordable. Staff are helpful and friendly.
This location was arranged by our excellent Uganda based tour company, Brovad Tours as a stopover spot in Kampala before heading to Chimp Trek.

Room Tip: Ask to see another one if you do not like the first one.

We stayed at The Lodge as part of a large group (4 rooms) for a family event. The facilities were decent, nothing special (slow food service and very limited menu, wifi only worked in the lobby, none of the TVs worked). The service during our stay was also OK, nothing special.

What ruined our experience completely was the management of the place. It was very difficult to know who was in charge, and the people in charge (once they appeared) were incredibly unprofessional. Some of our interactions were so ridiculous that they were almost comical if they weren't so frustrating. The following are the reasons we will be staying elsewhere next time we are in Kampala:

1. A member of our group asked to negotiate the price of his room because it was small and had no access to a sitting area or kitchenette (like other rooms also rented to our party at the same price). The staff member he spoke to said that they could discuss a discount, but when we checked out the next day the staff refused to even consider it--despite their promises less than 24 hours earlier.

2. (This is the almost-funny one.) The same unfortunate member of our group paid his non-negotiated bill in US dollars and received some small US bills as change. When he attempted to use the same bills to settle a laundry bill (all during the SAME transaction), the staff said that they could only accept them at a discounted exchange rate. (The SAME bills that they had just given to him!!!)

3. One group among our party departed a day earlier than planned. We informed the front desk staff a full day before and reiterated the change of plans to 2 other staff members. Nonetheless, the night was included in our bill. When we asked to see a manager to resolve the dispute, the woman who appeared (evidently a manager? she had been completely invisible during our 6-night stay) blamed US for the error and refused to negotiate at all. They even locked the gates so we couldn't leave until we paid the full amount. Our group included several people who have traveled all over the world, and none of us has ever seen anyone in a customer service role anywhere take the nasty tone she used with us. She made no attempt to resolve the dispute at all--only to get the money. We said we would write a negative review about our experience, and she said that she didn't care. We ended up paying so that we could move on with our trip, but the encounter was one of the most unpleasant many of us had ever had while traveling overseas.

4. When we resolved the accounts among our group after we left, we realized that we had paid $1100 ($500 deposit plus $600 balance) for rooms that should have only cost $950. So after all the nastiness when we settled up at The Lodge, we actually overpaid--and would have overpaid even if we were successful in reducing our charges to only the rooms/nights we used. For all the demands and fussiness about amounts and forms of payment, bookkeeping was surprisingly shoddy. Given our past experience, we are still debating whether it's even worth the drama to return and try to get our money back.

Needless to say, we will not be back.

I went to the lodge, kampala (17 Aug 2013 ) on the basis of the review of this site. And there was a shocker for us. The man at reception did not want to show us the room even after requesting for many times ( though should not have even requested , and just walked out ). Instead wanted us to pay , and then move to the room ! Ridiculous. I have never ever seen a person being so rude and obnoxious in any of the hotels I have been to. And then after a long argument when we went on to see the room and wanted to move out to look for a better place, the guy closed the main gate to stop us. All that he did not do was to physically harm us. Then somehow , after talking to someone on phone he allowed us to move out. That is the welcome no one would want on his first trip to Kampala. Not recommended if the hospitality of the staff depends on their mood and NOT as a profession. SACHIN.

The staff is amazing. They are extremely friendly and helpful. It's a small, quaint lodge that is peaceful, safe and clean.
The breakfast each day is included in your stay and it delicious.
Alex is the manager and is a great guy. Be sure and take time to talk with the staff and get to know them a bit. They reflect the best of so many of the people of Uganda.
We will be back for another weeks stay very soon since we are returning to finalize an adoption.

I stayed at The Lodge last weekend during a volunteer mission for 5 days. The rooms are great, a twin or double bed is lined with "brilliant" white sheets and the shower and toilet are modern and new to match. I'm usually a 5 start girl and was throughly impressed from start to finish.
There is a common living room with a TV that a kicthen (no fridge) if your a longer term guest who wishes to have storage. The common living room is only shared by the room upstairs or down and you can both look the common room when you go outide.
The hospitality of the couple who own the home is unmatched. A home cooked breakfast awaits your daily stay. The toast has an unfamilar sweet taste alongwith the local jam that I am yurning for already. They also make omlette and egg toaities but the variance keeps every day fresh. The rooms are changed daily accompanied by fresh towels and they are always ready to help. I miss it already...

Aside from voluteering we went into town most evening - Ndere centre was well worth the wait. The Lodge is 20 mins from Kampala, I would advise that you use a taxi the hotel are familar with to take you to and from town and plan ahead (5 is busy so takes 1.5 hours but after 7pm about 30-40 mins). (45,000 UGS) each way and they will usually stay in town if you are there for a few hours of come back so 90,000 total). As an expat from Dubai I like to the expat spots and keep it safe with the areas I visit. I always felt safe in Kamapaa and cant wait to return by Sep

Garden City shoping centre - we tried a lovely Indian rest on the top floor. We didnt shop much.
Sheraton Kampala - The cocktail bar is chilled and more of a mens cigar room but outside there a great opp to dine al fresco with a live band.
Casablanca - an outside chill-out italian with casual dining. The Shisha is great but the pizza I chose had a strange after taste. In any case the chips tasted like UK and I was please
Mamba Point - Best Italian and affordable. Classy surrounding and quite romantic
O'Leery's Irish Pub - for the young but a good expat spot on Acacia oad
Big Mike's - classy al fresco Bar next to O'Leery's with endless cocktails, shisha and a club attached that you gain free entry (kicks off around middnight)

Room Tip: This venue was close to where the childrens home was so I will be returning. Not so great if you nee...
