We have returned safely and happy from our self-drive trip through Uganda. We rented a Toyota RAV4 5 doors car from Roadtrip Africa, and did not have any issue on our trip. It are indeed older cars, but we received it spic and span clean, and in very well maintained condition, oil, water and radiator were all full. We just asked for another spare tire, since the one on the car had almost no profile anymore, they immediately changed the tire for another good one. The air conditioning worked, which was indeed good when driving through bushy areas with a lot of tetse flies during game drives, when you have to keep the windows closed. Everything worked perfectly fine, and we had no break downs or flat tires. Self drive in Uganda is really not that hard, especially outside of the city centres. Don't drive after dark, which Roadtrip Africa also advises, so just leave early enough in the morning if you have a long drive ahead. Google maps worked perfectly for our trip, we bought a Ugandan MTN SIM card at the airport upon arrival so that we could roam during our trip. Internet connection is usually very good, MTN has good coverage in Uganda, even in the national parks (I had 4G reception in Bwindi park!). And that way you have internet connection when the WIFI of the hotel or lodge isn't great.
I can really recommend Roadtrip Africa, they also booked our gorilla permits for us, which we received together with our car. For Europeans: they also have a European bank account which makes money transfers a lot cheaper if you have to pay upfront. They communicate very well when planning, and they have a very informative and comprehensive website.
A great tour of Central Kenya, with a great car (Hilux) and perfect camping gears!
I appreciated the flexibility of having the car delivered to us in Lake Elementiata.
It was the fifth time for me to book a car with Roadtrip Africa (4 times in Uganda, and this time in Kenya), which obviously must mean that I like this company!
Great company. Very good communication - fast and transparent. From planning to payment impeccable communication and execution. We hired a Toyota Hilux with driver. Godfrey, our driver, was a experienced driverguide who knew all the nationalparks and places to go - thank you Godfrey - you were great! He supported us a lot and we had a lot of fun together. We recommend to anyone who is not sure whether to drive himself or not to hire a driver. We did drive already ourselves in other countries like Namibia, Botswana, Malawi but Uganda is much more challenging although we never had rain. We booked the whole trip with car, lodges and driver at Roadtrip - everything was to our complete satisfaction - the lodges were also great! Uganda is a great county to visit - great nature, great people and wonderfull landscape. We will choose once more Roadtrip if we will go to any of the countries they offer.
Roadtrip Africa is a great company that delivers what is promised. When planning the trip I had regular contact with the company about the trip and details of the rental. They are very friendly and all questions were answered quickly and satisfactorily. Their website is easy to use and there are no hidden costs. When flying over I received messages through whatsapp with details of the car drop-off and the contact details of the person brining the car. Also while on roadtrip, the company was easy to contact and questions were answered quickly.
The car performed great. It handled all situations and all the terrain we wanted it to. Very reliable and comfy off road vehicle. We enjoyed the self drive safari very much and can recommend everyone who is looking for an unforgettable experience.
I rented a Rav4 5 doors with driver. The communication with Roadtrip is fast and clear. The car was in perfect condition; no breakdown, no flat tires although the roads in the south-west Bwindi area were really tough. For me the driver was a great extra value for information and which gave me the time to enjoy the scenery and wildlife and not to worry about potholes, dirty or flooded roads and directions within the national parks. I would definitely recommend Roadtrip Africa . Uganda is a scenic country , people are friendly and the services at the hotels/lodges and national parks are great value. The gorilla and chimps trek are exceptional ; the lions were more difficult to spot. I visited in April/May for 2 weeks. I was very lucky with the weather and I got only 1 time wet. Rain was at night or late afternoon or during driving but it did not feel like rainy season...
Great communications with the team, reliable vehicle for self drive (though over 20 years old) friendly and helpful service. I’m a repeat customer so can recommend
