For the price, this is a terrible hotel. The Rock Garden music is VERY loud, and they could not get me to a room that was quiet. I got sick after a meal there, and the staff and service were so-so. Was awakened by a knock on the door one evening, and a phone call the other evening from ladies of the night. The hotel seems to ENCOURAGE this. Absolutely avoid at all costs. I moved to the Fang Fang, and was very happy there.

The Speke Hotel is a nice, colonial style, hotel. However, the rooms are a bit noisy because of the bars surrounding the hotel.
The breakfast is rather poor.

I have been a frequent traveller to Uganda over the last 3 years and have stayed in many of the city hotels.
The Speke Group of hotels the following: Speke Hotel, Kabira Country Club, Speke Muyonyo Resort, and Tourist Hotel;

The Speke, the oldest established hotel in Kampala, been there since the early 1900's (and it shows), offers prospect of so much more, very noisy and lacks good security, strange non resident solitation takes places late at night - at your door. Could'nt wait to check out of this hotel everytime I was booked in, in fact banned my travel agent from placing me there after my 4th visit.

Kabira Country Club, a fantasy name, a U shaped establishment with a gym and swimming pool, is as far as this extends to being a Country Club, with some tennis / squash courts evident as well. Expensive but decently appointed. I stayed here for 6 months, so that indicates it was acceptable. It is a favoured venue for corporate launches, so it can get noisy in the main courtyard area.

Speke Resort, never stayed there but had meals and used conference facilities, well out of town and a hassle to get to if relying on taxis etc. Setting does not appeal to me, but offers a variety of accommodation from traditional hotel rooms to bungalows.

Beware this hotel group train their staff in the art of profiteering from foreign exchange:
- in house exchange rate if you want to pay in local currency isconverted from USD to Ugandan Shillings at least 10% above the going rate;
- charges to pay by credit card, will add 5% (in USD) plus USD 10;
- payment by bank draft / cheque / electronic transfer can add USD 25 - 30 to the bill.

- will charge you up to a 20% service fee on your bill, then add VAT on top of that charge and the listed menu ordered. Read the fine print on the menus, as each restaurant in the group has different rules.

A WARNING never add a tip onto the bill, especially if paying by card at any of these places - the waiters / staff will never get it.
If the service has been good, make sure you give them cash in hand.

I have stayed at Speke Resort a few times and enjoyed, the lovely
pool and beautiful lake victoria, The food is good, and great value,
The stabels restaraunt is built on high legs and overlooks the lake,it has open sides and a thached roof,
But beware when putting all your restaraunt bills on your tab,
always make a note of your bill,and do not let anyone take your credit card out of your sight.as i had my details taken last year and used.
The rooms all have AC but not all ac is working,we moved rooms twice one year. The rooms are large and well equipted.and very clean
do not change your money at the resort, as the exchange rate is terrable.go into town, the banks are much better,
if you are going on safari do not book from the uk, book in Uganda its much much cheeper,
the Ugandan people are delightful.and i would recommend Speke
as agreat place to stay.

I've been travelling around Africa on business for years and finding a good hotel in Kampala has always been problematical. Having tried most of the Kampala offerings, i have pretty well settled on the Speke as my base. The atmosphere is friendly, as are the staff, although you need to push hard to get anything fixed. But that is the same all over. If you take a coffee on the pavement cafe, you'll probably meet somebody you know.

On my last visit, I was particularly impressed with the flat screen TV in my room that had a built in DVD player. If you're staying over a weekend it is essential to ask for a room away from the Rock Garden if you want to sleep. The Speke isn't perfect, but for my money its the best of the bunch in Kampala.

This place has wonderful charm and is nicely located if you want to be in the heart of Kampala. The staff were excellent and responsive to all requests. I had a room on the back side of the hotel which was thankfully quiet since the bars in front of the hotel can be quite loud and run late into the night. If you're staying here definitely ask reception for a room that doesn't face the street. This is also not a credit card friendly place (except for paying for your room)...none of the bars and restaurants attached to the hotel accept them. You should also know that breakfast is NOT included in the room rate though they do have a reasonable breakfast menu whose price can be added into your room rate (read: chargeable). Really, the only problem I had with the place were the ridiculous number of prostitutes who ply their trade there. If you are a man and alone (or with other male friends) you should expect to be accosted at least once an hour by someone who wants to sit down and "talk." Seriously, in the week I stayed I had no less than 50 women try to provide me with company. Some would kindly walk away if you said no but others would continue to pester you until I finally found I had to walk back to my room just to get out of the situation (never mind everyone looking at you). The hotel does little to keep such women out so I would not suggest the Speke as a place if you're going on a family vacation.
