“Good option for the budget traveller!”
Reviewed 30 September 2013

This old world hotel is smack-bang in down town Lusaka on teh Cape to Cairo road, aptly known as Cairo road.
Prices are excellent with great special deals for travellers. The services and the food are basic - yet the hotel's staff and management are awesome! Stunningly friendly, humble and kind they always go the extra mile, for you.

The food is basic Zambian fare. Tasty and econimical.
Although the street outside the hotel is incredibly busy - there is a strong sense of being safe amidst the various cultures and hawkers. I never came across any shady characters or beggars.

The Italain ice cream, and the local pizza, were really great.

If you are looking for a 5 starupmarket experience and are very particualr - don't stay here. If you are looking to save money, meet local people, and experience real Zambian city life - stop over at the Lusaka Hotel!

On pricing - a Jamesons Whiskey at the Intercontinental - 24 Kwacha (5$.) At the Lusaka Hotel - 10 Kwacha (2$.)

Our accommodation cost about 20% of the cost of the local International hotels. Seeing as we were working and only sleeping at the hotel - this made a lot of sense!

Room Tip: Make sure that your air conditioner works, when you book in, particularly in spring and summer! And...

Agree with all the previous reviews. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly (including reserving onward bus transport in advance of our arrival) and check in and out was very easy. Good value overall given the city centre location. Rooms are quite dated but air conditioning worked and we had hot water throughout and good water pressure. Breakfast is average but the restaurant in the evening is not bad at all, expecially given that choice to eat locally in the evening are very limited (it's not safe to walk around the streets at night: take a cab). Would certainly recommend it to anyone passing through Lusaka who wants a basic night's stay but with good service.

Room Tip: Try to get a room towards the rear of the hotel

This old hotel is reminiscent of a bygone era where greatness and grandness were part of the package. Don't be put off by the city centre vibe - it is still a good place to be for those who want comfort without the cost. The WIFI here was one of the fastest i have experienced in a hotel and its free.
Rooms and Passages are tired and need refreshing.
A shower in the room in place of a large bath would have been preferable.

Thank you for spending your precious time to write a review on our hotel, we honestly appreciate your feedback. As the oldest existing Hotel in the city centre, it is our earnest desire to blend our old age with modernity both in infrastructure and technology. We therefore are pleased that you found our free Wi-Fi internet services enjoyable. As we celebrate 100 years of hospitality services in 2014, we have already embarked on a refurbishing program to refresh all our rooms in order to package a well balanced greatness and grandness of the bygone era in modern style. And we have already completed half of the rooms on the second floor and we would like to allocate one of these upgraded rooms in your next visit.
We look forward to welcoming you back at the Hotel on your next visit to Lusaka.

You get what you pay for-a small, basic room (be sure to check the historic photos in the hallways). What I was impressed by was the efficiency of the front desk staff. On the day of my departure, my bus left before the included breakfast, so waiting for me was a packed breakfast, a newspaper and a taxi to the Lusaka Bus Terminal.

Yes, we read the tripadvisor reviews before checking in but, there were specific reasons for us wanting to stay there. Lusaka was our most northerly point of a three month self drive meander around Southern Africa and it was on our itinerary because we wanted to trace some family history. So, it was essential that we stayed close to the centre of Lusaka, it had to be within our overall budget for 90 days of accommodation and, as the oldest hotel in Lusaka it would certainly have been a watering/feeding hole for members of the family we were researching. In this context, readers will understand this review against a backdrop of the quite gloomy experiences of other reviewers. It is certain that this tired old lady is in need of some TLC and the owner, David Thompson, is working his way through an ambitious programme to upgrade. We met him at breakfast on our last morning there and when we left, we had no doubt that, superficially at least The Lusaka will certainly be much prettier when we next visit. We were also confident that this quest for superficial prettiness (driven in part by the sort of reviews that appear on tripadvisor) will not be at the expense of the Hotel's deep charm, absorbed within the fabric and essential historic decor of the building. The exceptionally caring staff identify with this tired old lady and work that much harder to try and compensate the guests for seeing her wrinkles close up. David Thompson understands this and is adamant it will not suffer as he gives the old lady a face lift. And in that staff care, was the essence of the pleasure we experienced when we stayed. A bar manager took us to a nearby church on Easter Sunday to listen to the magnificent choir. A desk clerk took us to an important local football match - two old, white faces in a sea of black exuberant youth. It was a wonderful, unforgettable experience. The doormen, security staff, cleaners were all kind, friendly and genuine in their desire to look after us to the best of their abilities; and for this reason you should not be put off by superficial appearance. Nothing was too much trouble at the Lusaka Hotel. If you are a genuinely considerate guest, you will have an exceptional experience of genuinely considerate hospitality, from the heart of the delightful team of Zambians that David Thompson has put together. If this is what you are looking for, then do not hesitate to pay this Gracious Old Lady a visit.

Room Tip: If you don't like the first room they show you, ask to look at others. The management is pragmat...

I stayed in that hotel because is the most central as I needed to work around Cario Road. The place is a historic one as the hotel is told to be the oldest in Lusaka. Despite that historic background the hotel urgently needs some maintainance to bring it back to acceptable standards of lodging. The rooms are in poorest condition and for sure - if you stay for some days - you will need to experience different rooms throughout your stay. Installations are generally not up to date, shower installations were almost inexistant for proper use, to experience air condition is the same problem....
the most positive aspect in that hotel is the friendlyness of the complete hotel staff! they are really helpfull and make the stay supportable.
Prices are much too high for that level of quality but hotels are generally too expensive in Lusaka in relation to quality.
WLAN Internet access is available at the lobby for free!
Maybe I would stay again for a few days just because of the location.
Anyway do not expect to much luxury at Hotel Lusaka.
