“A Clean and homely place to stay”

We put up for the night at Pioneer Camp on our 2nd day travel through Africa. We were picked up from the airport. The owner of this place, Paul was quite welcoming and warm. The ever smiling staff out here were quite helpful and they made sure in all possible ways that we had a comfortable stay. They even helped us in unloading our luggage. The room and other facilities provided to us were clean and comfortable. We had a nice sleep there. I loved the T- bone steak served for breakfast. It was yummy. Its flavor was great! I feel it still lingering on my taste buds. If at all I visit Zambia again, I would surely stay at this lodge.

Let's face it. Lusaka is a dump.

You drive through hundreds of kilometres of beautiful countryside and then arrive at this scruffy, chaotic mess with its annual cholera outbreak? It's no wonder there's talk of abandoning it and building a new capital elsewhere!

Fortunately, the best place to stay in Lusaka is not actually in Lusaka at all. Pioneer is about a 20-40 minute drive from the centre of town. How fast you do that trip depends on how fast you want to drive the final stretch of rough road. I'm cautious with bad roads.

Pioneer has everything you want - it's good value for money, you've got a range of accommodation, you can stuff yourself silly, you can get roaring drunk, you can surf the net, you can have a dip in the pool, you can take one of the dogs for a walk in the surrounding bush, you can sit and read a book in the garden and spot the odd unusual bird (e.g. lizard buzzard).

If you need to pass via Lusaka I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

We stayed at Pioneer Camp for 1 night on the way back from a fantastic trip to the North Luangwa. For an 'airport' stopover hotel, this is a little gem of a place. But first a word of warning: this is not 10 minutes from the airport - it is 10 minutes by tarmac road to the turn off, and then we had 20 minutes at an absolute crawl along a dirt track - it was dark and we did begin to wonder whether the taxi driver was lost and we were a little worried - it would have been better if we had been told about this in advance and infact a 4x4 should be used for the tranfers. Having arrived, Paul and his staff were on hand to greet us at the hotel. They checked us in and took our orders for supper before having us transferred to our room - the room was nice, very large with 'African' feel to it, and a very comfortable, large bed. The bar at Pioneer has a very relaxed atmosphere - a nice place to have a drink and wind down after travelling. We were given an a table outside to eat our supper of steak and chips/salad which was extremely good. In the morning we were transferred to the airport (the journey going down the dirt road was a bit quicker, but anyway we knew what to expect!) all very efficient. All in all, we were really not expecting very much from our stay here, it was a necessity due to the BA flight schedules, but I would recommend it and would stay again - well done Paul, Pioneer Camp exceeded our expectations!

Pioneer camp is a true home from home in the middle of deepest darkest Africa. The Owner paul is a young English gentleman and he made sure we had everything we wanted/needed to make our stay enjoyable and comfortable.
The staff at pioneer always have smiles on their faces and are happy to give a helping hand when unloading luggage etc.
The BEST part about staying at pioneer is the infamous Pioneer T-bone steak!!! YUM!!
Thank you Paul for looking after us so very well. I look forward to returning to Africa and staying at your lodge again.

A really cool place to stop off and catch up with like-minded travellers on the route between the north and Livingstone. Very well organised with a good atmosphere in the bar and a great cooked breakfast if you required it! Small pool available. All facilities were very clean - would definitely use this Camp again!

This is an OK place to stay, very laid back and comfortable. Paul, the owner, and his staff, very warm, welcoming and helpful. Airport pickup was perfect. Room, a chalet, large and comfortable, very good breakfast.

We stayed here on our first night of a 12 day African trip at the recommendation of our tour agent. The price was US$125 each for two, total US$250, which included airport pickup, room, supper and breakfast. Since we were arriving a bit late I inquired to our agent if supper would actually be available, our SAA flight was arriving at 8:55 PM. We were told that supper was included and absolutely would be available. We even made our menu selection ahead of time to make it easier for them to be ready for us. Well, when we arrived at about 10:00 pm, no supper, we were told we were too late, kitchen was closed. They knew what time we would be arriving and they should have delivered what they promised.

Pioneer Camp was our first stopover on our way from Kafue National Park to South Luangwa on our self-drive trip in Zambia. After the jarring effect of navigating Lusaka following eight days in the bush, Pioneer was a quiet and calm landing place. The staff is very friendly and professional, and the setting is a nice green respite from the dusty road.

Since we were self-contained campers, we stayed in our own tent and cooked our own meals. But, the restaurant looked very busy. The showers were adequate, and additional toilets were located at the pool, in the campground. The open common area was very comfortable, and we met some interesting fellow travelers. We tried hooking up to the wifi internet connection, but it was very slow (many guests were doing the same), so we just sent a couple e-mails.

Shopping is about 10 minutes away, so we were able to easily return to Lusaka in the morning to resupply our camping stocks.
