“Plus ça Change”
Reviewed 2 October 2013

As indicated in my previous review I said that I would be staying in the Kaingo for my second visit to Zambia.

The friendly nature of the owners and staff was even better during this visit – they even put on a cocktail party for us.

However, all of the niggles from before remain - especially the unreliable internet connection (it has just gone down again in the middle of replying!!!) and noise - but there are three other factors I think worth noting:

1) Sport on TV: I mentioned that there are a lot of sports channels. This is true but SS3 - which shows the English Premier League matches live is not available;

2) Mosquitoes: the room is not properly mosquito proofed so as a result there were mossies in my room. Whilst there was a mosquito net on the bed this does not protect you when in the room during the day/evening; and

3) Payment in Advance: as before, I was asked to pay for the full fortnight in advance. Whilst this is acceptable for one or two night I do not think it acceptable for longer stays - this makes it impossible to change hotels and would cause problems in leaving the country early – as I nearly had to do by direction of my employer. As the credit card payment system does not always work – a day or two before departure would be fine.

So, my conclusion is as before – it is a good place to stay if there are group of you with your own transport but if you are in Lusaka for a short time on business, one of the more central chain hotels will probably suit you better.

However, in the right circumstances, I would use it again.

Room Tip: Lion room at the back is the best room.

Rooms

The rooms are somewhat tired with old furniture - although the bed was comfortable. There is satellite TV with South African Sports Channels. There was a large ‘fridge and I was supplied with a kettle after arrival.

I had the “best” room in the place which was of large size with a sitting out area overlooking a garden which might look better in the wet season.

The bathroom area was very cramped with you having to sit under the sink to use the loo! The sink had no plug and, with separate hot and cold taps meant that the washing water was either cold or scalding. The mirror was not over the sink and the bulb about 1 watt making it near impossible to shave properly. There was no shampoo.

The room was freezing cold – I was in Zambia in mid-winter – and the heaters I was given were totally inadequate to the task of warming the room. However, the air conditioner was replaced with a unit which also heated the room making it quite cosy.

The Wi-Fi internet continually failed despite regular attention but a new cable connection was installed.

Although a self-contained compound there was a lot of external noise hammering (next door was being re-roofed); music/drumming in a neighbouring compound); car alarms which made it difficult to work in the room at times.

Lodge

The rest of the lodge was also in need of TLC. Meals were cooked to order and were quite good. Breakfast was fine and was included in the room rate; as was transfers to and from the airport. There was a pool and pool bar which would be good during the hot season.

Location

The lodge is located a ten minute drive from the city centre (20 to 25 minutes from the airport) and there are no decent restaurants nearby. So, you have to eat in the lodge or have your own transport to get into the city centre restaurants. There is a small shopping mall nearby with a bank, mobile phone shop (to get your cheap local SIM card; Airtel); good pie shop and good supermarket (Spar).

Staff

As the title makes clear this is the main saving grace of the place. Without exception, the staff were friendly and tried their best to sort out the numerous problems as I have indicated above.

Summary

There are, I think, seven rooms in the lodge. At Kw600 (£70; €80) per night it is much cheaper than the hotels – for example, the Taj, probably the best value of the Lusaka hotels, was charging $215 plus internet. So, if you are on a budget or, if there are a party of you, who want to be together most of the time, and have your own transport it is a good place to stay.

Otherwise, for short term business stays, if your per diem is good, you would be better off nearer the city centre. I’m not sure it lives up to the “Executive” element of its name.

However, I will be returning there for my next stay later in the year.
