I signed up for their 2-week medical trek, believing that their website was an accurate depiction of their company and thinking it would be great to combine serious trekking with volunteer work. After they got my money, I found out what a lousy company they were. They told me the night before the trek that the trekking days were only 3 hours or less, instead of the 4-6 hours listed on their website. They also suggested that night that we might want to purchase better sleeping pads as the ones provided were very thin - they couldn't tell us sooner so that pads could be purchased earlier? Their guide Ram was inattentive to my needs the day of arrival, so that I didn't believe it was safe to trek in remote areas with him as a guide. He picked me up at the airport and then stopped on the way back to Kathmandu. Both he and the driver got out of the car and left the area, leaving me alone in an unlocked car which I did not expect from airport pickup and caused me concern for my safety and my personal possessions as I had never been in the country before. Ram also had said he would go with me to exchange money since we arrived at the hotel at dusk, but then did not do so as he was preoccupied with his cell phone while sitting with other tour participants who were heavily drinking alcohol. I decided not to go on their trek and believed they would refund money or provide a comparable alternative trek per stated policy on their website, which they refused to do and then they also became verbally abusive. I complained to the Ministry of Tourism in Nepal, who said they would have made them refund my money or start legal proceedings if they had been based in Nepal. But since they were based in the USA (a fact they had kept hidden from me), and only had guides with no authority in Nepal, they could not do anything about the situation. The company lied to my credit card company so I initially lost that fight, but later my credit card company refunded the full amount I had paid this company.
Note to Public: This reviewer keeps deleting previous reviews and reposting. We have reported this to TripAdvisor. This person did not attend Medical Trek Nepal. She was verbally abusive to the guides upon arrival, and seemed to have some sort of problem with the country of Nepal, and particularly Kathmandu. She was not well-suited to traveling in the country of Nepal. She was belligerent and we do not take this complaint seriously (as we normally we would for our valued guests).
Based on her inappropriate behavior The Tourism Police in Nepal and The Ministry of Tourism did not take her complaint seriously. We are left shaking our heads about such a cantankerous and malcontent traveler. Trekt Himalaya offered her several other treks and options. The reality is, this person decided within moments of arriving in Kathmandu that she thought it was "filthy" and that she did not like one of our guides, who consistently gets very good reviews and is a genuinely kind and helpful person (as are most Nepali guides).
Anyone who would like further details and clarification can email us or contact the company directly. We value our guests and truly care about their enjoyment in Nepal. However, this is the one time that we just cannot take this type of online harassment seriously. Plain and simple, this American woman is a bully. Our managers and guides (4 in total spoke with her and tried to appease her) were all called names by this person. It is one of the most bizarre displays we have seen in our tourism careers.
We welcome any questions. It would be a shame if someone did not volunteer with Medical Trek Nepal based on this ridiculous account.
Include this tour on your bucket list now! It’s a great company that guides you through the entire process! Beginning 90 days previous to the trip with newsletters and important information about what to do before and during the trip.
The guides are from Nepal, they know the area really well, and are well trained and experienced.
This trip is life changing! It’s a mix of fun, culture, exercise, volunteering, and beautiful views!
My journey was an amazing adventure. I would highly recommend this trip. The guides and support staff were all great. Super helpful. 21 days to Shanghra la!
Awesome bucket list trek!
The TH team was amazing and made a huge difference in my trek. Before the trek, they let me know exactly what to expect when arriving in Kathmandu and what to pack. Ram met me at the airport and guided me to my hotel. The next day we took the bus and started trekking!
The trek was incredible! We stayed in tea houses each night and enjoyed talking with the locals and other trekkers. Hiking along the paths that Nepalis use everyday, you can keep up a good pace and cover miles quickly - but you have to be careful not to climb to fast or altitude sickness will be an issue. My advice is to take it easy and enjoy the scenery that you've come to see. Tashi was a best guide and knew everyone along the trail.
Amazing trip trekking and helping remote villages of Nepal. Greeted with smiles and true appreciation of villagers who have never had medical help come to their village. Lots of work. lots of laughs and giggles, LOT of warm welcomes and fun dancing at each village!!! Trek with a difference and MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!! Great guides Ram and Binod!!! Always smiling always helpful..always grateful to have foreigners and local staff helping the people of Nepal!! Once in a lifetime experience..that you will want to repeat!! Rafting at the end of the trek was a great way to finish!
Thanks for joining us on Medical Trek Nepal and for this great review. Ram and Binod will be happy to hear you enjoyed the trek!
This trek was incredible. It ticked all the boxes for someone looking for a bit of adventure the beaten path, culture and fun. From the beginning it was well organised and I felt I was welcomed into the group not only with the other volunteers but with the guides, porters and cooks. The medical aspect was super interesting and it was a special experience being able to work with local villagers from remote regions of Nepal first hand and give medical care and education. The trekking inbetween was a perfect amount with the scenery making the longer days worth it. Shout out to Ram for being the most wonderful guide who went above and beyond to make sure every aspect of the trek was enjoyable. Would definitely trek again with this company!
Thanks for joining us on Medical Trek Nepal and for this great review. We will be sure to pass along your "shout out" to Ram. He is a great guide!
