“Best location and hospitality”

I always go here when I'm in Kathmandu. I love the location, right on Basantpur Square. The owner, Varun, always invites you for a glass of locally brewn alcohol and nice conversation. Really, who wants to stay in Thamel when you can stay here?

Tired of the noisy Thamel, we were looking for accomodation in other areas of Kathmandu when we found Hotel Sugat. The hotel is an old property and it could take a renovation, but overall we found it really cosy. We were offer a room facing the square with attached bathroom for 550 NPR. The room was not very big, but it was comfortable and there was hot water in the shower. The area was quiet in the night and in the morning we were waken up by the birds. The owners were always nice and helpful, and they always gave us honest advices when we asked for restaurants, prices of taxis, etc. They kept our bag while we were trekking without any extra charge. There is also a beautiful roof top area overlooking the square.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the square

Took a while to find a hotel around Durbar square, and after visiting several places decided on this one... mainly because of the location and the fairly clean bathroom. There are some good rooms looking down on to the square, but we were in another one near the back of the hotel, with only a window looking out on the stairs. The room had a double bed, fan, table, chair, and a bathroom with toilet, sink and shower/bucket. It was ok but nothing special. We had brought our own toilet paper, but were given two of the dirtiest towels to use (which we didn't). The best part of the this place is the rooftop terrace, with tables and chairs, plants and lots of mosquitoes!! but a good view of the area. We only stayed one night, and really wished we had gone for a cheaper option around the road, but did enjoy watching the sun set on the rooftop for our money.
