Of all the accommodations I have stayed at in Nepal, Asmita’s is by far my favorite—and this is coming from someone who has lived and worked in Nepal on four separate occasions. When traveling together, my wife and I believe that regardless of all the historical sites or scenic views we have listed on our itinerary, it is actually the people we meet along the way that provide the most memorable experiences. Therefore, we prefer to stay in family run places which generally offer a bounty of charm and personalized services not found at hotels and larger guesthouses. And this is exactly what was provided to us when we stayed at Asmita’s Bed & Breakfast.
First, the location and setting made this place the first choice for my wife. Located in the north eastern part of Thamel , we were in walking distance to the heart of bustling Thamel, yet within our clean, bright, spacious and quiet rooms we felt miles and miles away from all the dirt and commotion. Also, the fact that there were only four rooms not only meant we received extra attentive service, but also kept the place free of comers-and-goers, thus adding an element of peacefulness and security to the place. The price range (worth every cent) dissuades the shadier budget traveler element and attracts more families, couples and sophisticated travelers.
Second, the family is full of wonderful people. There is plenty of information about their backgrounds listed on their website, so I will just stick to our experience. Unfortunately, we did not meet Dharma as he was trekking in Langtang at the time, but the rest of the family was there. Everyone was very knowledgeable, thoughtful and caring, and went over and beyond to make sure our trip and our stay were as pleasant as possible. A perfect example, is how Asmita helped nurse me when I fell ill with a stomach problem. Besides helping us find an excellent doctor, Asmita also prepared special meals that seemed to be quite efficacious because I was back on my feet the second day.
Finally, this brings me to the cooking. We often awoke to the aroma of freshly baked treats. Each morning we received a wonderful breakfast (included in our room price) of tea (the best Nepali tea we had in Nepal), cereal, yogurt, eggs, fruit and sometimes fresh-baked pastries. The menu also has a Spanish influence and the meals we had were delicious. A local Nepali friend of mine, whom we treated to dinner there, marveled at the place and the food commenting, “This isn’t like any guesthouse; this is like you are home.” I couldn’t agree more.
