“Good for trekking hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 December 2012

Average hotel for Kathmandu. Customer service was excellent. Good buffet breakfast daily. Rolling power outages create challenges in knowing which light switches to use in rooms. As quiet as can be expected in this noisy city.

Room Tip: Do not stay on the top floor as you will have no water pressure

stayed here for 2 nights: very basic hotel with super old rooms (probably dating back to the 1960's). my room was haunted - things kept moving all over the place at night. shower was broken, paltry breakfast. omg! and it being next to a dance club, it gets extremely noisy every night. but the overall charm of Nepal really compensated for this paltry hotel.

We stayed here for nearly a week and loved its location. The staff were always very helpful and the rooms had everything you needed including running hot water. I would stay here again if coming to Kathmandu.

Stay there for over a week, very basic hotel. Location is closed to Thamel, 5 minutes walk., and yet away from the hustles and bustles, kind of quiet from all the crazy city noise and dust.
All staffs are friendly and always trying to help. Room is reasonable size, very basic but clean. Free WiFi at the lobby, but during my stay, though no fault of the hotel, the city power out every evening, so be sure you have your flashlight ready even the hotel got back up generator of their own.
The two gardens they have are very nice and be sure to have a beer or two at the roof top, BYOB. The breakfast is good portion and it's the one of the few places I dare to try everything and did not got sick.
I have not stay in other hotels in the area, but just by passing by the others, I will certainly pick this hotel for it's "away from the action and yet closed enough to jump right back in."
Overall, I will recommend this hotel, and will certainly go back.

I spent a few nights at Shakti Hotel in preparation for a trek to ABC. I felt the rooms I had were large enough for my needs (ie. two people dumping out luggage and stuffing packs for a trek). The hotel offers storage until your return and also offers breakfast (that you can eat without getting sick). There is a backyard area, away from the streets of Thamel, that is actually kind of a nice get away from the chaos. Bathroom had western style toilet, though things get a bit wet when showering.

Cons: Hot water shower was hit or miss. Sometimes I had it and it was great, other times it was lukewarm at best--probably depends upon usage in other rooms.

Would I go back: Decent rooms for the price and location. There are better hotels in Thamel, but I would return and recommend, especially if on a budget.

I have been to Nepal seven times now - on business and pleasure, staying in a number of hotels.
For our initial visits we stayed at the Shakti and enjoyed our time there.

We subsequently stayed in number of other hotels including the Yak and Yeti, the Kathmandu Guest House and the International Guest House. The Shakti is better than all of them ! -and we have recently returned there for an an excellent time. We will be making this our regular hotel on future visits.

The hotel is very clean and in an excellent location - five minutes walk from all the action in Thamel but far enough out to be quiet (as opposed to the KGH and IGH).

The most impressive thing about the hotel is the excellence of the management.

The manager himself is a lovely man and all his staff are extremelely accomodating and helpful.

When my wife broke her ankle - all the staff went above and beyond the call of duty to be as helpful as possible - kindness we will not forget.

I strong recommend the Shakti as a place to stay in KTM.

Ok, so it's in Thamel - like many others, so no advanatge here
Can't tell who's who once inside, other than wo is a manager, because walk around dressed in a jacket, and are fatter than all others. The bell man was dressed as any guy out in the street, So I got startled when we grabbed my bag. Anyway, the rooms are awfull ; stinky, look unclean, cramped, with really cheap furniture, a flimsy foam pad as mattress, and questionable sheets and blanket. The bathroom was small, no water pressure at all, and basically no soap either. The AC was no working either. Next morning the breakfast buffet was a joke - not even brewed coffee - yes, Nescafe. We had to stay there because we returned one day earlier, and the hotel where we had reservations was full. Big mistake trusting our outfitter to find a place, but was just one night.
There is better for sure even in Thamel and for less - at $50 a night, this was indeed a rip-off
Please stay way from this junk - even for one night you will regreat it

Room Tip: no working AC no water pressure crrmped quarters, both room and bath unconfortable bed questiona...
