Having been directed to this hotel by the tourist desk at the airport in Kathmandu, within about 15 minutes of checking in we really wished we were not staying here.

Like other reviewers we were instantly harrassed by the tour company based at the hotel. They scared us into buying very expensive airplane tickets to Pokhara for the next day, as they told us everything was booked up. Once we had purchased these tickets we found out that there were plenty of other tickets available, for upto $40 per ticket cheaper.

Even after we were sold these airline tickerts, we were continually harrassed by the tour company to buy other things, such as trekking trips. When we declined, as we wanted to sort out our trek from Pokhara (where we were starting from) we were treated in a very rude and unprofessional manner.

We did not eat at the restaurant, but had a few drinks in there, and on one occassion the waiter stood over us waiting for a tip, and the second time actually short changed us and said he had taken it as his tip!

The room / bed / shower in the hotel are ok, however the room cost that was agreed at time of booking, suddenly escalated at time of departure, which we refued to pay.

I have to say I WOULD NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN. It had such an impact on our impression of Kathmandu, that we really did not want to return to the city after our trek. However, we did return and had a completely different (positive) experience, when we based ourselves at Hotel Courtyard.

I started coming to Nepal when Freak St. was the cool place to stay and over 30 years have tried many hotels around there and Thamel area.
Hotel Nepalaya is my favourite. Clean, tidy rooms, an excellent bathroom, lovely friendly staff, beautiful rooftop restaurant/garden. Amazing views of Kathmandu from up here, a good spot to get a sense of the city.
Amazingly this hotel is right in the heart of the craziness that is Thamel, yet walk a few metres down the alley and enter a quiet peaceful haven.Free internet and plenty of hot water.
Looking forward to returning in 2012.

While the staff and owner of this hotel are very nice, they allow tour companies to solicit sales.

Upon arrival I was tired, hungry, and just overall exhausted from my travels, while attempting to get a beer and some food at the hotels restaurant, I was approached by multiple people who would not leave me alone, but insiste on selling me a tour package, or trying to get me to hire them as my trekking guide.

The next day at 9 AM they were banging on my door, waking me up, to ask if I was ready to purchase a trek. I told them I was sleeping and to go away.

A few hours later, when I woke up and went to the restaurant, once again I had people harassing me again.

Later I left the hotel to walk around the city, the trek guide proceeded to follow me around Dhaka for a couple of hours, presumably to see if I was checking out other trek agencies.

The beds in the hotel are okay, but overall i'd say give this place a pass, save yourself the stress of being constantly harassed to buy tour/trek packages.

I saw them run the same scheme on nearly every person as soon as they arrived. They bring you up to the restaurant on the rooftop, then as soon as you sit down start calling you 'friend' and trying to sell you stuff.

The food in the restaurant is okay, but nothing special. It is a beautiful view from the rooftop restaurant though.

Internet via wifi was free and available both in the rooms, lobby, and on the rooftop terrace.

I've been to Nepal five times before, each time beginning my stay in a hotel in the touristy Thamil area of Kathmandu, and Hotel Nepalaya was by far the best place I have ever stayed in Kathmandu.
Hidden away in Thamil (a feat I thought was previously impossible) it is quiet, clean and has the best roof top garden/terrace (with spectacular views!) in Kathmandu and is very reasonably priced. The rooms are very big and the bathrooms must be the best in Nepal (based on worrying experiences). Just these features make it one of the best places to stay, however, the best thing about Nepalaya is the staff. After staying here on & off for 2 months while I travelled out to different areas of Nepal the staff became not only helpful guides to the city and Nepal, but also really good friends. They invited us to a proper Nepali party on the roof with free beer and lots of dancing within the first week, played endless chess and even took us out to buy a few gifts at knockdown Nepali prices.
Hotel Nepalaya really made an amazing trip even better and I cannot recommend highly enough for people to stay here!

I have never encountered a hotel that the staff is so friendly. I finally found it at Hotel Nepalaya. The room and bathroom are very clean. Hot shower 24 hrs. They serve delicious food at the rooftop restaurant. Best of all is the friendliest staff both at the front desk and the rooftop restaurant. Love them! Will definitely be back one day!
