“Lovely hotel in pleasant grounds”
Reviewed 5 May 2011

The Shanker is an interesting building in pleasant gardens. The swimming pool is a bonus after a hard day sightseeing. The room was comfortable and everything worked (fridge, lights, shower, safe etc). It was only about 30 minutes walk to Durbar Square via the tourist area or the old part of town. The staff were pleasant and helpful.

Stayed three nights alltogether in Shanker; one before trekking and two nights when returning to Katmandu. Hotel interior is absolutely charming with all wooden carvings! Staff and service was excellent, the whole place was like safe haven in the middle of all hassle and traffic chaos. I had two different rooms, both were sparkling clean and cozy, and what was the ultimately best thing for me after long trek, the hot shower was truly hot and with proper water pressure! Hotel provides drinking water in rooms (they use thermos bottles) but if you want to use mini bar, you have to ask staff to fill it up.

This hotel was very beautiful. I really enjoyed the aesthetics of the hotel. Also the staff was very kind and helpful at any time. The food in the restaurant was great also. The breakfast had a variety of Indian items as well as American/English. This was great because a lot of the hotels that I stayed at in India or Nepal had toast and an omelet and that was it. I recommend the Momos also. The rooms were clean and room service did a great job. I did not have any problems when I stayed there. If you are looking for the comforts of home with an elegant twist this is your hotel!

Room Tip: The suite was great, but the other rooms are nice.

The beautiful palace is a perfect place to explore the northern part of the city and the valley and ideal to relax in peaceful surroundings in a hectic and dusty city. We enjoyed the spring sun in the blossoming garden and on the terrace next to the bar and the swimmingpool.

Delightfull; travelling with a 13 year old twin, the Shanker proved to be the ideal hotel.
As a traveller by profession I do get bored with all the standard chains and here we found an oasis of peace and quiet in the middle of a very fun/ lively/noicy city, that not only
offered hospitality but also a colourfull/quaint local ambiance.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hotel Shanker, Kathmandu is a heritage hotel, housed in a 19th-century palace in the heart of Kathmandu city. It was the royal residence of the rulers of Nepal, from 1894 until 1964, when it was converted into a hotel. The facade and traditions were kept intact but the interiors were redesigned to give travelers the kind of comfort they'd expect of a world class hotel. The hotel is characterized by exquisite and authentic objects d'art. For example, the carved windows displayed in the lobby bar are over 200 years old. ... more   less
