I stayed here for several night as a client on a trekking trip.
Having been to Nepal three times previously, I can honestly say that this is a really good place, much better than where I have stayed before in Kathmandu.
Rooms are ornate, clean and with plenty of hot water.
Despite previous negative reviews listed here, I found the staff to be friendly and helpful.
Phone charges though are expensive-you are much better going off to Thamel.
The location of the hotel is good-about a 10 to 15minute walk to Thamel, depending on how long it takes to cross the busy roads.
I ate in the hotel several times and the food quality is fine (breakfast and dinner), though again there are better restaurants in Thamel if you don't fancy a buffett.
The hotel is quiet, has a nice garden next to the swimming pool.
Overall a good experience.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Hotel Shanker, Kathmandu is a heritage hotel, housed in a 19th-century palace in the heart of Kathmandu city. It was the royal residence of the rulers of Nepal, from 1894 until 1964, when it was converted into a hotel. The facade and traditions were kept intact but the interiors were redesigned to give travelers the kind of comfort they'd expect of a world class hotel. The hotel is characterized by exquisite and authentic objects d'art. For example, the carved windows displayed in the lobby bar are over 200 years old. ... more less
