The location of Shanker is superb, within 10 mins walking distance of Thamel and the Durbar Marg shopping street.
For a hotel with such a big name, my expectations were maybe a bit too high...the matrasses are a bit too hard to have a comfortable night of sleep, the staff operates quite bureaucratic (eg. bring your laundry to the front desk and they send you back to your room as it should be picked up there according to procedures). If you are tall (1.93m) you will not be able to stand straight up in the bath tub while taking a shower at breast height.
Positive remarks are the very friendly staff and the wide choice at the breakfast buffet. Overall the stay was ok, but for this price level a bit beyond expectations.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Hotel Shanker, Kathmandu is a heritage hotel, housed in a 19th-century palace in the heart of Kathmandu city. It was the royal residence of the rulers of Nepal, from 1894 until 1964, when it was converted into a hotel. The facade and traditions were kept intact but the interiors were redesigned to give travelers the kind of comfort they'd expect of a world class hotel. The hotel is characterized by exquisite and authentic objects d'art. For example, the carved windows displayed in the lobby bar are over 200 years old. ... more less
