We stayed in the Shanker for two nights - one night prior to our trek and one night after the trek. We stayed in almost identical rooms both times, but after coming back from the primitive conditions in the mountains and Pokhara, certainly appreciated the luxury offered by this hotel more on the second night!
The rooms are basic by Western standards, with a hard bed, couple of chairs, kettle and teabags, bathroom with yellow water. We never had enough towels and had to ask for more. The duvet was so heavy it was hard to lift. The room was quite small. The main downside of this hotel, however, was the noise from the "disco" (or whatever it was) outside. We stayed on Xmas Eve and New Year's Eve - both times the noise was so bad we had to sleep with ear plugs and even this did not drown out the racket outside. Possibly this is just unfortunate timing, but we got the impression this noise happened most weekends as well.
Breakfast was "ok" - a small selection of cooked items, bread and fruit salad. Service regarding tea and coffee was average. Dinner was also ok - reasonable selection on the menu, service was average.
As I have never stayed in a different Kathmandu hotel, it is hard to compare this to others. The whole place has a good ambience - the old-worlde feel of the conference rooms and staircases for example was very nice. It also seemed to have 24/7 electricity (with short outages only) which was a huge improvement on hour hotel in Pokhara and given Kathmandu's awful electricity supply probably means the hotel has its own generator - a key feature for anyone wanting a hot shower or use of a kettle at all hours.
The grounds of the hotel are very nice, with a nice lawn and swimming pool (too cold to use in December though!).

We stayed here based on all the positive reviews..we were highly disappointed with this place, we paid $104 and it's NOT WORTH it at all, considering it's Kathmandu!! I've been to Cambodia, Vietnam & Philippines, so I"m not being picky here.

Cons:
- I wrote 2 emails requesting airport pick-up, No response, No apology
- Dated rooms
- Location: constructoon site next door
- Bathtub/shower was dirrrrty & shower curtain rods were Rusty
-Bed was strange..it sank in the middle, not leveled.
-Staff was rude and unaccomodating.
-We checked-in late in the evening and they didn't even allow us 1 hour late-check!!
-Stinky carpets

Overall, we really didn't like this place...it's also a long painful walk to Thamel for restaurants. When I mean painful, I meant "dusty, smogy, stressful, chaos traffic" walk. Bring a face mask to protect your nose. This is not a pleasant relaxing walk. Saw a motorbike runover a dog..which made it even more miserable to begin with!

The Radisson nearby looked much cleaner and livelier.

Hotel seems a haven away from the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu. Set back from a main road amongst gardens, you feel like you are miles away from the constant hooting of horns that goes on in kathmandu. Staff extremely helpful. Rooms clean and comfortable. Plenty of hot water for post-trekking shower. Breakfast buffet ok. Wifi extremly expensive (data download on uk mobile network would have been cheaper but no 3G available in Nepal).

We were made very welcome on arrival, and although the first room we were shown was a twin, when I had booked a double, there was no question about moving us, and we were shown to another room straight away and asked if it was ok before we accepted it. Then whilst we settled in the porters went to get the keys exchanged. The bed was perfect, even though we both have different ideas about what makes a bed truly comfortable, we both loved it! The safely deposit box is simple to use, the fruit basket contained fruit which was actually ripe and mouthwatering....(the finest I've seen in any hotel - I don't normally bother with trying the fruit, but couldn't resist it here)
The bathroom was acceptable, plenty of hot water, clean enough and the best we saw in Nepal - although that doesn't actually stand as a great recommendation you have to be pragmatic!
All the staff were fantastic; the reception staff knowledgeable, the bar and waiting staff friendly, nothing was too difficult for the porters, and there was always a friendly greeting from housekeeping which seemed to go beyond duty. I also have to make a recommendation for the in-house tour desk (Himalaya Expeditions) who provided us with excellent service.
The garden by the pool was pleasant to relax in. The small bar was really cosy and friendly - we had cocktails one evening and they weren't overly pricey, we had a nice meal from the bar menu. There is a wide selection of evening meals available in the restaurant to suit every taste, and the breakfast buffet, although not extensive, is tasty and fulfilling.
The hotel has a generator to ensure constant electricity, it was interesting to notice the change over...but even though our room overlooked the generator, we did not find it at all noisy when it was running. There are also a number of shops in the grounds, which seem to be well priced and sell good quality items. We made use of the tranquillity spar, which is off site (although they can arrange for room-service) about 10mins walk away, down a sidestreet next to the Canadian Embassy. They had a great service for a couple, where we were able to have massages in a two-person room together.

We walked into Thamel from the hotel - its about 10-15 mins walk, not far once you know your way around, although the roads are busy/mad to cross. There are also some shops and restaurants in the street just outside the hotel. We were told by someone who lives in the area that it is a safe place to walk, and we certainly felt comfortable and secure.

Basicly we had a lovely couple of days staying in the Shanker. I'd rate the place very highly, especially for a few days rest and recovery after spending time exploring Nepal's more extreme terrain. Tired looking trekkers were being welcomed on a daily basis, and there seemed to be good many return-guests, and I'd certainly consider staying there again.

Hotel is wonderful to stay at. The grounds and gardens are beautiful. It is peaceful and quiet from the traffic in the city. The gift shop is very good with lots of variety and the owners of the shop are just so nice and helpful and will bargain with you. The pool is clean and well maintained. Room was comfortable beautiful beds to sleep in and a seperate lounge was very comfortable. The thing that I remember most about this hotel is how wonderful and very friendly the staff were. They really made you feel at home from reception to restaurants and rooms the staff service was exceptional. Could not do enough for you. I recommend this hotel highly as an enjoyable place to stay.

These people lied to me when I came in after midnight from weeks trekking and I asked if there were hot water. They said there was--no problem. But then there was not--cold only, i was stuck with the room though even after wanting out after no more than 10 min. staying in the room and not dirtying anything. So not allowed to refund what I'd given, I was stuck and it is NOT a bargain. Next day I found something better
for less.

Hotel Shanker, Kathmandu is a heritage hotel, housed in a 19th-century palace in the heart of Kathmandu city. It was the royal residence of the rulers of Nepal, from 1894 until 1964, when it was converted into a hotel. The facade and traditions were kept intact but the interiors were redesigned to give travelers the kind of comfort they'd expect of a world class hotel. The hotel is characterized by exquisite and authentic objects d'art. For example, the carved windows displayed in the lobby bar are over 200 years old. ... more   less
