Discovered this gem while looking for a place to stay nearer to Thamel. Dont go by the name "Guest house" . It is a regular 3 star type property.
Stajed in the new wing, and the rooms were really nice, airy, lit well and very comfortable.
Front office and the other staff were very warm n friendly. Must mention Mr. Uttam here, who is the operations mgr there. ! He was just about everywhere, making one feel wanted n cared for !
The only dissapointment in our stay was the breakfast ! It was soooo unimaginative, the mgt needs to give serious thought to it. Cold pretoasted bread ??? Cold fried eggs dumped ??? Flies sharing yr cut fruit, yogurt etc ?
Obviusly the kitchen doesnt report to MR Uttam !
Apart from this full marks to this place !

Room Tip: All garden facing rooms are awesome

The Kathmandu Guest house is situated in the middle of Thamel and just outside you will find variety of shops specially the supermarkets on the right side of the gate..try shopping always from supermarket..
Going inside the hotel you will suddenly feel all the noise of the streets has gone away into a peaceful and calm environment..Rooms are clean and the staff are very friendly except for a few restaurant waiters..
Kathmandu has quite a lot of power cuts and every single day in the noon you will have one for around 4 5 hours..the hotel provides generator back up to the light and television..yah television and not the fan..
there is a good breeze from the garden so you wont feel hot..
The food quality is great and prices also reasonable..I had the best breakfast over here in whole Nepal..Try booking online by checking up all the online booking sites as the prices are just too much different and cheaper online than just going to them and booking..
The hotel also has a variety of shops from where you can purchase products..they arent very much costly and offers quite a lot of genuine products..

Room Tip: The hotel has no lift so try taking rooms on the 1st floor..

The Kathmandu Guest House for me means peace, Situated as it is in the middle of a noisy part of Thamel ,you enter the courtyard at the front of the hotel and you straight away feel at peace with the world. The noise has gone and you find your body winding down immediatly. I have in the last 25 years stayed in this hotel four times and seen it get better and better. The garden at the rear is great for relaxing. reading or meeting like minded people and the rooms surrounding the garden are the best. You can eat outside in front of the resturant or eat out at any of the eating places which prolferate within walking distance of the hotel. What more can I say but give it a go , you will not be dissapointed.

Room Tip: Order one overlooking the garden at the rear.

I stayed in this hotel my first time in Kathmandu - I loved it then, and decided to check it out again last week after a gap of more than ten years.

I had booked in the old wing, but found things rather drab when I got there. Also, I discovered that the old wing has no power back-up, so I asked for a transfer to the new wing. The rooms in the new wing are bigger and more luxurious - and of course more expensive. But the manager on duty offered me a decent deal and I has a great stay.

The hotel is located in the heart of Thamel, the most happening neighbourhood in Kathmandu and walking distance from Darbar Square where I had my meetings. Despite the noisy surroundings, the hotel is peaceful - it is set back from the road and has a beautiful inner courtyard with a serene garden. The rooms overlooking this garden are the best ones.

The staff is friendly - very helpful and accommodating. The lobby is beautiful - lots of Nepali crafts and antiques on display, tasteful floating flower arrangements, and a lovely fragrance of lemongrass in the air. The restaurant is on a paved terrace outside and is small but charming, with an interesting menu. The spaghetti is truly excellent - it tastes fresh and home-made and is served in old-fashioned bowls that added to the flavour.

My main quibble is with the breakfast buffet which is really dismal. Cold pre-toasted bread, cold and leathery eggs that have been ruthlessly fried to death, cut fruit and yoghurt in open bowls with flies hovering around, and no variation at all in the spread. The coffee is excellent though.

It's true (as some have noted) that the old wing is rather shabby but clean enough and the prices are really rock-bottom - so one can't really complain about the no-frills approach.

All in all, a good experience - just remember that there are lots of other places in Thamel where one can grab a good breakfast :)

Room Tip: Ask for a garden-facing room.

Stayed for a week when I arrived in Kathmandu and got situated before heading up to Pokhara to start the Annapurna circuit. Had a clean room, the price was great, and it's right in the middle of everything. I liked it so much I spent another four days when I got back into town before heading to India. Highly recommended.

I travelled with a girlfriend in Nepal and we booked here based on her great experiences here over a decade ago. It sounds like it's not lost it's charm - and only grown in size since then. The accommodation was clean and well appointed, food was generous and tasty but by far, the staff stole the show. Truly it felt like no request was too much for them. They were always happy to say hello, know how your adventures were, offer recommendations and generally be helpful in anyway they could. I would love to return to Nepal and would gladly stay in this hotel again. Namaste!

P.S - the only reason sleep quality lost a point was because we had carrel cats fighting outside our rooms on numerous occasions. Truly this could happen anywhere, but it was an impact to our sleep. Generally the hotel is a quiet slice of heaven!
