“Great location with garden and friendly staff”
Reviewed 12 April 2011

Stayed at Nirvana garden for a week. It is an oasis close to Thamel. Staff are very helpful. I also liked the breakfast at Nirvana. A great way to start your day. It is very close to the shops and restaurents. The free wifi is also great. It saves you the hassle of going to a cyber cafe.

I've been to Kathmandu several times and I always stay at the Nirvana Garden Hotel. Thamel is a great tourist area in the city with shopping and restaurants. Nirvana Garden is an oasis and reprieve from the chaos of the city. I value being able to walk down that little side street and escape into beautiful gardens and peace. I enjoy walking to the upper balcony and viewing the city from a lofty perch. The staff at Nirvana try so hard to please and i appreciate everyone from the managers to the servers and cleaning staff.

I am a frequent traveler to Kathmandu, and this hotel is my favorite and regular place. The hotel offers its own airport pickup free, by which we can avoid any hustle with taxi drivers. The circumstance is quiet, and the staff gives useful appropriate information. In Kathmandu, we have electric power only for 4 hours a day, but, Nirvana has its own generator which creates enough power for minimum room light and internet facility.
I do not recommend its Sansala restaurant. Its food is poor and expensive. There are many good restaurants a block far.

Room Tip: Look for any rooms in its Annex facing the garden.

Ideally located in Thamel, Kathmandu's touristic hub, but just a very short walk from the main street and you're at the hotel, leaving behind the noisyness. The receptionists at the front desk are super friendly and help you with anything to make your stay memorable. The mini suite room was ultra spacious, very clean, with a nice balcony overlooking the beautiful garden. The beds are comfortable, with soft mattresses. (Since there were a few complaints about the beds, I was told they now have softer mattresses.) A wonderful stay; have no problems recommending the hotel. Namaste!

Great location but the construction site next door makes it very noisy and dusty. Rock hard beds, smelly bathrooms and sporadic hotwater (if any). But the worst part is the light fingered staff. After we went out for a few hours shopping we came back to clean rooms but all my kids pockets had been cleaned out as well. Not a nice feeling. Verbal and written complaints went unanswered. Warning posted in about hotel not taking responsibility for loses incurred in room and not alot was taken, but still felt violated.

With very few guests in town we were given a room, on the top floor, with floor length windows on two sides. The carpeted room was huge, but not all rooms were this size. The hotel sits at the end of a short alley, next door to the Tibetan Guest House in Chetrapati. This is in Thamel, which is very busy, and over-run with huge motorbikes, but near every conceivable travel agent who can arrange a trek, raft trip, jungle safari or bike ride.

During power outages (16 hours a day) there was electricity for lights in the bedroom but none in the bathroom. They provided candles for the bathroom. There was hot water twenty four hours a day. Take a torch anyway if you're going to Nepal. Rooms had TV's but they only worked during full power hours.

Food from the restaurant was pretty good, reasonably priced, and they would gladly trek up four flights of stairs to deliver to the veranda on the fourth floor. You can order breakfast the night before and it's delivered right on time the next morning.

The manager Bijay and his staff were very helpful and accomodating. They went out of their way to help us with any problem including ironing out problems with a non-English speaking driver we had arranged to take us to Chitwan National Park. They were also willing to work with us on the price of the room. Keep in mind that most hotels in Nepal are offering substantial discounts because business is very slow. If you book online you will not receive any discounts.

Overall, a very good experience.

We planned to spend four nights here, but checked out after one. The rooms were uncomfortable, and the beds ... well, we'd have preferred a bed of nails! The promised "hot running water" doesn't exist, and the buckets of hot water were provided grudgingly. The restaurant can best be classed mediocre. The hotel overlooks a school, so it can be rather noisy during the daytime, though it's quiet enough at night. The staff couldn't have been nicer, but they just don't have much to work with.
