“Overall great stay”
Reviewed 3 December 2013 via mobile

Overall I had a great stay here, the rooms are very comfortable & clean & the staff were all fantastic. The beds are super comfy and I had a nice massage too.
The downside- the hot water situation. I couldn't get any hot water on my first night so went to call reception but my phone didn't work. The staff couldn't fix the phone but the water was being sorted, unfortunately I fell asleep waiting! Had other probs with the hot water had lukewarm showers & boiled the kettle a few times to have a warm bath. The only real let down for me for an otherwise great stay.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your review and we are glad that our clean and comfy beds treated you well with your sleep.

We appreciate your feedback and we are sorry to know that you had trouble getting hot water in your room. Regarding hot water, it usually takes 5 to 10 minutes getting the hot water from the tap. Even after that if you cant get hot water, our front desk officers will look after it and fix it right away with your call. So next time when you visit here we will try our very best to make your stay a very comfortable one with us.

Looking forward to greet you again with the coming days !

Best regards,
Royal Penguin Boutique Hotel team .

The staff were very friendly and attentive to our needs. We stayed in the penthouse suite for the first 3 nights (before doing the Everest Base Camp Trek) and another night in a Deluxe Double room at the end of the trek (the penthouse suite was booked out). Both rooms were clean, had consistent hot water / wifi and were very comfortable. While the gym was small, it was still sufficient. The restaurant had good food at reasonable prices. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Royal Penguin to anyone looking to stay somewhere a little more comfortable in Kathmandu (this is the perfect place to stay at the end of the Everest Base Camp Trek - when the hot showers are very much appreciated!!). The only downside was that there was no elevator - which would have been a nice addition following the Everest BC Trek!

Room Tip: The Penthouse Suite was lovely, we definitely preferred that room.

Dear guest

Thank you for your kind thoughts and we are overwhelmed to know that your stay was a good one.

You stayed in our one and only room "Penthouse Suite" at Royal Penguin where we offer varieties of amenities in the room like Jacuzzi , steam shower , and many more. It is the only room we have in the roof top of our hotel from where our guests can have a beautiful view of the garden outside.

We understand it is a little effort taking long staircase reaching to the top, but next time you visit here in Penguin, you can have an option of staying in our other wing Penguin-2 with more updated services and facilities with an elevator as well :)

We hope to see you soon in our hotel in the coming days !

Kind regards,
Royal Penguin Boutique Hotel team

We stayed in this hotel 3 times during our stay in Nepal. We called it "our base camp" as we used and very appreciated their free luggage storage.. Each time we enjoyed warm welcome, helpfull staff and nice room with good bed and linen and of course hot shower. We liked their breakfast served any time of day what is very convenient especially if you have an early flight. The location in Thamel is very good, all shops and restaurants are nearby and Durbar Sq. is just a nice walk away. After all the sightseeing and shopping do not forgett to proffit from their beautiful roof terrace! It is a calm oasis in Thamel with good views of Himalaya /weather permitting/. To resume - I would stay here again and our next stop in KTM will be here for sure.

Warm room was one of the most important thing for us. It was quite cold in Kathmandu (we visited it at the end of November) so it was very nice to come back at the warm cozy room (heated by AC) after chilly evening weather. And beds were perfect! They were extremely comfortable, not too soft and not too hard. We were after trekking so all that comfort was welcomed twice. And I absolutely agree with all those people who written about good service, good attitude, beautiful designs and others. Strongly recommend, best place in Thamel.

Dear Jane

We are thankful to you for your nice words about us. And its our pleasure to know that your stay with us was a good one.

We have AC in all rooms in order to keep our guests warm in the chilly winter and cool in the hot summer. With a prior information, we can also warm up our guests room if they would want to have a warm and welcoming room upon their arrival. And we always have hot water supply in all rooms so that our guest can have a warm bath even in the cold days.

We hope you would like to visit Royal Penguin again in the coming days !

The overriding goal of the Royal Penguin management was to fill the rooms and business before and over the comfort and convenience of the guest!
Twice I was jacked around by management to stay at the RP Hotel. The Royal Penguin knew I was staying three nights and then two days later management told me to leave since only the penthouse was available. Both times the Royal Penguin booked me into a higher priced room than I wanted. Next door, the Tibetan Hotel was comparable and Nirvana was less yet. At both alternative hotels, one doesn’t need to worry about being treated badly.
Don’t stay here!

Dear William,

Thank you for your review and we are sorry to know that you had to shift hotel during your stay. However we tried our best to make your stay with us a good one.

As you have mentioned that the management told you to leave was actually because you did not confirm your room with us just other than the 2 nights. And because of the peak season we could not hold any rooms without any confirmation. Even in this situation we did hold your room for 2 nights and when we could not get any confirmation from your side, we had to sell the unsured rooms. On the other day, we only had our Penthouse Suite available which you said was of an higher price and denied to stay there.

Overall we would like to apologize for an inconvenience caused during your stay. During your next visit, we will assure you to provide with a remarkable service and a memorable stay with us.

Warm regards,
Royal Penguin Boutique Hotel team.

Staff could not get hot water to run. Lodged complaint at 930 pm and we had to keep checking with them every half hour, only to be told that we can try and see if the water is now hot. At 1130 pm, we were told we need to wait for another 1.5 hours. What rubbish! We asked for bucket shower instead. If it ain't gonna work, just be upfront about it.

For a relatively new hotel, things seem to be falling apart- the knob for the tap fell out - we had to wash with the tap at the bathtub. Staff made no effort to repair it even though they were aware of this.

Dear Miinkk!

We are very sorry for the hot shower situation and you are absolutely right to be unhappy about this. That was an emergency situation. The reason of that were the local strikes which didn't let us get the specialist to come solve the shower problem immediately. Unfortunately the Nepali strikes make it hard sometimes to get the specialists fast enough. Same reason was with the knob for the tap.
From now on we'll get several specialists that will be available 24/7 even on holidays and strikes days, so a thing like this surely does not happen again.
We apologize again for this situation and thank you for staying with us. And we promise to make sure your next stay with us is as comfortable and perfect as it normally is.

Warm regards,
Royal Penguin Boutique Hotel team.

The hotel is new and decorated in a modern and interesting manner, with all facilities, including free wifi.
On top of this, the hotel is located in Thamel, with many shops nearby. From my point of view, this was really the best hotel we stayed in Nepal.
