We started are Nepal adventure here and ended it here. We stayed in De Veda Guesthouse. It's a shopping paradise.Lots of shops selling jackets, scarfs, souvenirs, with bargains, good local restaurants and bars, lots of fun just walking around.. Great place to get all your souvenirs or find some great food.

If you're new to Tibet you want to stay here. English is widely spoken, good restaurants that are clean and cater to the western taste, lots of hotel choices, lots of tourists, lots of good deals, so bargain, even though the price seems ridiculously low.
Thamel has most everything a tourist needs.

Thamel is the place to party in kathmandu. Was with friends in Kathmandu and visited Thamel almost every evening. There are no of Coffee shops , pubs , bars , restaurants and small shops for shopping. Negotiation skills required when shopping, Walking around is the best way as the streets are narrow and crowded.

Thamel Market is a typical foreigner market where local goods- typically handicrafts, trekking equipment, dresses are sold. This place also has quite a few eateries on the first floors with different cuisines - there are small shady places, but some are also known and famous. For foreigners, you need to very careful with the place where you eat as hygiene in these joints is not good.
For shopping, our wives bought a few dresses and shawls/ stoles. You have to bargain really hard on the prices, as the prices they quote will be really high, especially to foreigners, who pay in dollars. Some of the shopkeepers themselves told us that they quote a price 5 times higher to foreigners compared to Indians and also close the deal at 2-3 times higher prices.
There is some good mountaineering stuff also available here, especially at the North Face store near Sanjay Ghose chowk, but it is quite expensive.
Overall a good place to shop around and enjoy the market. This market stays open till quite late -almost 12-1 in the night and best time to visit is after 6 pm.

A great, vibrant collection of streets and alleys, chaotic and wonderful for shopping of all sorts. Souvenirs and trekking gear a plenty. Heavy tourist area so lots of bargaining needed.Plentiful hotel, guest house, B&B and hostel options, at reasonable prices. A good hub to navigate the rest of Kathmandu from.
