The road are so narrow and dirty, that you can't walk or drive comfortably.the shop are unplanned ,hapazardly placed.Trafic is also not good. As a tourist hub, it should be upgrade ,otherwise tourist will directly go to pokhara from airport and then back to airport.

Thamel area is great place to stay when visiting Kathmandu. There are lots of budget options to stay, lots of shops around for buying trekking stuff, woolens or handicrafts and too many restaurants to satisfy your hunger. There are two ATM lounges in the area so its very easy to draw money from whatever bank you use. Pilgrims bookstore, the best in the city is also a short walk away and so is Garden of Dreams.

This is where all the action happens. Plenty of cheap hotels, bars, and restaurants. There are many shops selling stuff. Just be warned to shop around and barter hard. We went in august so stuff was very cheap but still needed to barter. In high tourist months, prices will go up so be warned and shop around.

We almost got taken by several vendors in Thamel. They know we are tourists and they will price gauge us in a bad way. We learned this the hard way, by not walking away. You can always get the real price if you haggle for a bit, and then leave. When you are leaving, the vendor will always tell you a legitimate price in order to try to get your business. That way, when you approach a second vendor, you know what the item should cost and you can start your haggling at that price. We also learned, over masala tea with a local Nepali pashmina vendor, that all of the colored pashminas that say 100% cashmere are not necessarily 100% cashmere. You also have to be careful when buying scarves because many of them are imported from India or China, so if you want to support the local economy, try to buy from a vendor selling actual Nepali goat wool scarves. Ask to see a "ring scarf"...engage in conversation with a local vendor about the story of this special, high quality scarf. You will be amazed at the skill that it takes to make one of these scarves, and their versatility with respect to travel!

Chaotic, busy, slightly smelly, bustling and full of street hawkers. Bars, veg momo signs and food joints litter the streets. Then theres the gem shops, scarf shops, trekking shops, camera shops, soap and incense shops etc. Young Nepalis come here to drink and socialise, travellers come to have fun, whatever your inclination, Thamel offers it. Little tip though, buy ear plugs if you want a sound nights sleep.
