“Eye opener”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

This place is a must see for anyone interested in the culture or Hindu religion. The place is open to Hindus 24 hours and people from all over come to cremate their loved ones. There was one happening while we were there and was fascinating.

“Very Interesting”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

While it may not be for everyone, i was fascinated. The rituals and attention to family are amazing. Go with a guide that can explain what is happening and you will get much more from the visit.

“Morbid, an eye opener of Hindu culture”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

This place is Nepal's most renowned cremation site. It was our first time witnessing burning of body in the open. In Hindu culture, after the person is dead, his/her dead body is wrapped in cloth and placed on bamboo litter and body are delivered by barefooted pallbearers accompanied by the deceased's male relatives. The body has to be cremated within 24 hours. The eldest son of the family performs the cremation ceremony. The cries of the family members were heart-wrenching. Even though I don't know them, my tears fell and at that moment I felt strange and awkward taking pictures of the ceremony. A few hours later the ashes were collected and swept in the river. The five elements (metal, wood, water, fire, earth) united to form a human body. When a dead body is cremated in fire, the element returns to nature.

“Great cultural exposure.”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

A must experience to understand the culture. You can sit on the other side of the river and watch the cremations, without feeling like you are interfering in the rituals. Humbled and privileged to have experience it.
