Stayed here 3 times during our recent Nepal trip.
Pre and post trek then on final night in KTM after separate trip to Annapurna.
Fantastic location in Thamel - very friendly staff.
Try and stay in rooms that dont face on to the street if you prefer an uninterrupted sleep.

Stayed: April 2013

We spent 3 days before trek and 3 days after trek in Potala. Friendly staff, free tea avail at all times in lobby, hot water at all times, very clean, beautiful wooden floors and right in the centre of Thamel. Admittedly we did have one of the deluxe rooms but the small extra cost was well worth it. We stored our luggage while trekking and it didn't come back squashed flat!

Room Tip: pay the extra for a deluxe room

The staff were exceptional and I felt at home from the get go. Great value for money, hot showers, comfortable beds and considering you are in the middle of Kathmandu the rooms were quiet. There is a lovely roof top garden where you can relax with a good book or a cheeky glass of wine.

Best place in Kathmandu we stayed in. Staff is superfriendly and helpfell, rooms are clean, beds are soft (!!), shower is hot (!!), in the evening at least.
Conveniently located in Thamel, far enough from the bars to get a good night sleep, but close enough to walk to safely after diner or a cocktail.
Free towels, toiletpaper, soap and wifi.

(Not to be confused with Hotel Potala, we stayed there as well but this was not as good as the Guest House.)

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the backside/gardenside. These are more quiet than those on the streetside.

After my last visit to Potala Guest House, I was happy to see three new improvements in the facility. 1) The bathrooms have been renovated, which is good as they were the area needing a little attention. Now, given the typical standards of a budget hotel in Asia, they are very nice. 2) They have once again re-opened an in-house kitchen to serve breakfast. The meals are simple but having a freshly cooked meal served within 2-3 minutes scores big with my busy schedule in Kathmandu. 3) They now have wi-fi throughout the hotel. Previously having use to two very old and slow desk-top computers in the lobby was helpful but having wireless access 24/7 is awesome for all the work I need to get done there. And the wi-fi is on a solar powered battery system, so it never goes down during the periodic power shedding periods.
The staff has not improved, as it is very hard to improve something that is already EXCELLENT. The desk and lobby staff is by far the most helpful and friendly I have found in the past 40 countries I have been to.
