“Overall poor experience”
Reviewed 4 April 2012

Upon first arriving, loved the location of the hotel. After that, it all went downhill. When we got to our room they asked us if we wanted a larger room at the same cost. Great....or so we thought. It turns out that the room had a number of problems. First was that the AC (or heater, depending upon the time of day) would constantly trip the circuit breaker, so we were constantly calling the front desk to turn flip the breaker. Then it turns out the water for this room (501 in case you're wondering) was on the same water main as the kitchen. So most of the time we'd never get any hot water because the kitchen had used it up. At times we wouldn't get any water at all--the faucets would just sputter. Lighting in the room was horrible. At night you couldn't see what was in the wardrobe because there was just one small celing light. The breakfast in the morning was just passable. I don't eat a lot in the morning, so what there was sufficed. Except for the fact that the hot food was cold, and therefore a bit unappetizing. I wouldn't stay there again. I can handle the electricity outages and even asking them to come flip a breaker switch, but the whole issue of 4 days with just barely flowing water at the best of times turned me off.

We stayed here three different times during our stay in Nepal. Great location, just steps away from the main streets of Thamel. Nice garden in front of hotel. The shower in our first room was not divided from the toilet so everything got wet. During our second and third stay, we asked for a room with a tub and shower, so much better. Beds were firm, but comfortable and staff here are very good and willing to help.Provided with 2 bottles of complimentary water every day. As mentioned in another review, a lot of the electrical plugs in the room are very loose and therefore not useable. The internet connection in room very slow, but much better in lobby/dining/garden areas. Power goes on and off in Kathmandu, but when needed the generator is turned on. Comfortable chair in room for seating, TV and air conditioning. The breakfast buffet was acceptable and we always asked for omelletes. The dining area would benefit from a change of table linens on a more frequent basis. We would stay here again.

The Samsara Hotel is located in a side street off Thamel so that you have the advantage of being in Thamel but away from the noise and crowds. The hotel does have a lovely garden, but unfortunately the pollution is so high in Kathmandu that once you're off Thamel, you really don't feel like staying outside. My husband and I stayed at the Samsara for two nights, one on our way to Pokhara and the other on our last night in Kathmandu. All in all it's a fine hotel by local standards. However one should take into account that there is no elevator which means going up and down up to 5 flights of stairs, depending on where your room is located. During both stays we had unlimited hot water (which is not to be taken for granted). On the other hand the wifi although complementary is pretty erratic. During out first stay we had it on and off. On our second stay the wifi was down. There are also the Kathmandu power cuts to be taken into account. These are certainly not the hotel's fault, but when the generator takes over, you don't even have enough light to read a book. And then there's the general standard of cleanliness which always seems lacking. The towels and sheets are clean but quite threadbare and grey and the bathroom and toilet are simply not clean enough. The staff was very friendly and all in all the experience was good.

While not a 4 star hotel by American standards, our two stays at the Samsara Resort were very pleasant. The atmosphere is that of a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Thamel (literally just a few steps away). It's amazing how the chaos of Thamel falls away as you walk into the Samsara property. That alone is worth the price ...

With that said, the accomodations themselves are somewhat plain but serviceable. Linens were clean but well worn. Bathrooms were probably the worst part of the stay ... prior to our trek they felt dirty, but after trekking for almost 3 weeks they didn't seem too bad. Funny how your perspective changes. The staff was helpful and attentive. While I might try other hotels the next time I'm in Kathmandu, I would also be happy to stay at the Samsara again.

The hotel has a very good location.. in the heart of Kathmandu.. but the place itself is not that great.
The rooms had an uncomfortable air to them. Basic toiletries were missing, sheets were dirty and the plug points didn't work well. The management staff always came up with the most expensive options for sightseeing and cabs.. avoid them. Just walk out of the street and find your own taxi.. they are everywhere and easily available in Kathmandu.
Oh and yes, forget about having a hot shower, free wi-fi or even nice smelling clean towels! Maybe I am being nice to even call the experience average.

Overall a very nice place. There's not really any view from the rooms so I would suggest staying on the lower floors to save the hike up the stairs. If you stay in a room ending in 5 (eg. 205)then your view will be hundreds of noisy pigeons and you are likely to be kept awake by the neighboring hotels generator at night. Rooms ending in 1-3 we found to be the nicest. Room with double beds are available too. The place has free wifi most of the time and hot showers all the time although you'll notice the water smells funny. TVs and aircon in every room, free breakfast every morning, helpful staff, quiet location but still very central for shopping and tours.

The Samsara manages to over a peaceful environment in spite of being in the heart of the tourist area of Kathmandhu. The service at the Reception desk was excellent.

The room I was given however was a little grubby. There were small stains both on the bedcover and carpet, and the bathroom needed renovating - unfortunately the WC would not flush either! One overhead light was not working in the bedroom and neither was the bedside light. As I was only staying one night in transit from Pokhara, I did not inform the desk until my departure and I am sure that they would have done what they could to have moved me to another room if that had been possible.
