From the journey across the lake by small boat, paddled by the boatman and our guide, with a view of Fishtail peak sparkling in the sunshine, and the ascent through the trees to the hotel, to the views across the lake from our room and the silence all around only interrupted by birdsong, this was the most relaxing of places to stay, set among the trees on the hillside facing the mountains. Actually, that situation of the rooms created one of the small drawbacks - facing north, never really getting sun at that time of year, meant that there was a slight dampness in the atmosphere and the loo paper always felt damp! But the beds were really comfortable, the room spacious, our little verandah perfect for viewing the Himalayas across the lake and the staff in the restaurant most helpful and relaxed. There was an air of it having all seen better days but we find this often adds to the charm of such places and the setting - the water, the birds, no traffic - couldn't have been more tranquil. If you want peace and quiet, this is for you. (And they came round in the evening with hot water bottles!) I also tried the spa and had a vigorous massage from a cheerful little lady for a very reasonable fee, after which she gave me a robe to put on over all the oil and walk back to my room for a shower, looking oily but feeling great.
